Box will have stubby fit purpose fitted to align before and after the front and rear bars (respectively).

But need a good brand of tie downs to strap the box down to the rack to avoid it flying everywhere. Dont want to risk it for cheap, but at the same time looking for something value for money.

1500kg straps from http://www.theratchetshop.com/ were decent quality, but you might have to buy a few before the postage cost stops hurting.

that might be a good anchor point to fit so I can attach a rope with carabiner to the bar, but I will still need a ratcheting rope which is what I'm after.

Genuine Thule straps are the strongest available and are designed for roof rack systems - but they are not ratchet type.

Halfords, Asda, and Tesco all stock cheap ratchet straps.

I'm not sure from your post what exactly you are fitting here.

If you have 2 roof cross-bars and a roof-box, then ratchet straps do not normally come into it at all.

The box is attached to the bars by bolts/clamps that either fit into a slot on the bars or go right round them.

Then they are tightened securely from inside the box.

Or have I completely misunderstood what you mean by 'box'?

Hi, the box is custom built to my does out of plywood.

I designed the box so it has 4 stubby feet 33mm tall and fit around the bars so it won't slide backwards and forwards. The roof rack bars have flared ends so they will take high tension straps all the way to the end and prevent if from sliding off

I bought some endless ratchets and held the box down using a tennis ball seam style tied own and it worked brilliantly.
