Cheap basic PAYG
Our local Staples (Isle of Wight) has a simple Samsung candybar phone (E1100, I think) on Orange for £15, including £10 airtime. Looks a good deal to me, especially for a child, as it has an SOS feature that calls a preset number, e.g. home, when you press a single button.
