Misled by Carphone Warehouse
I bought a mobile from Carphone Warehouse via their online shop, which quite clearly states includes the purchase of a £10 airtime voucher - a separate physical item on the order. When I didn't receive the voucher I rang them, and was told they don't provide the voucher, but top up remotely within 72 hours.
Apart from the fact it means the shiny new phone is useless for up to 72 hours, it also means I can't use the voucher as planned to top up another SIM from the same provider, as I had planned to do (Virgin Media's new tariff is considerably less attractive than the one I have).
I had the usual runaround from their call centre people - no manager available to discuss etc, so have just got to mark it down to experience, and not use that organisation again. I'm just glad I'm not a Tiscali internet user.

Although the use of the word "Voucher" is unfortunate, CPW have always done this. It's to do with the way in which they are paid commission by the networks. Topping up the SIM card provided rather than giving you a physical voucher is a way for them to demonstrate to the network they have delivered a new connection.
This to some extent prevents people doing exactly what you propose to do, use the PAYG route to get a cheap offline handset. One which is more than likely unlocked from CPW.
The 72hrs will probably be a security measure, as you bought online.
What is the relevance of Tiscali in this thread? Other than them being crap.My farts hospitalize small children0 -
Carphone have bought Tiscali, Still see no relevence though.0

Obviously they don't want anything to do with CPW any more, so therefore don't want to deal with Tiscali. I thought it was obvious it was just a top up though.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Last one I bought a phone with £10 topup from CFW they underlined the new number on my receipt and said to phone Orange with the number and they would put the credit on to my existing phone, which they did.0

A member of our family had the same problem when buying on line.
If we were to buy again from Carphone warehouse it would be over the counter. You can always go back then and create a scene.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -

On the radio yesterday Charlie Boy stated that he wanted to improve Tiscali Customer Services!
Perhaps he could try this with CPW First!
