Want an exciting (but cheap!) phone - buy now or wait?

I'm at the end of my contract (now on simplicity tariff) and am itching to get a new phone.

Must have decent web browser, decent outlook sync (and good calendar), music player etc.

Was considering the Blackberry Bold or HTC Touch HD but having seen the N97 I was considering holding out for a bit as that looks the bees knees!

So buy now or wait until later?

I'm assuming that it would be several months after release that the N97 would be available on decent deals to match the above two on O2. With that in mind should I just go ahead now?

The Omnia HD will not be cheap. It might not be free even on a 24 month £35 contract (and I wouldn't buy any technological marvel on a contract that long to begin with).

I agree that it is a delicious-looking phone, though :D

The N97 uses rather dated hardware so it's not technologically as up to snuff as the Omnia HD will be. It, along with the upcoming Palm Pre, uses the next generation of mobile chips which are a lot more powerful.

Speaking of the Palm Pre, it's one worth waiting for as well.

Come summer/autumn, there will be quite a few smartphone models duking it out for the 'best premium touchscreen smartphone' label: the almost-sure-to-come next-generation iPhone, the Nokia N97, Palm's Pre, Samsung's Omnia HD, Sony Ericsson's Idou and whatever else LG or the other brands come up with.

So if your current phone isn't broken, why not wait a bit? :)

3rd and 4th quarter of this year.......

My g'f is about to get a blackberry from work so will wait and see if I like that. Good answers people - I might see if I can get anything on a 12 month contract - it not will wait!
  • I have just pre-ordered the Nokia N97 from Mobile Phones Direct and got the handset for free and the monthly contract I went for is only £39.15 per month. I get free 700 minutes and texts and also calls to landlines are free. Have a look, they have got quite competitive deals on there.
