new combi boiler on old system?
Hi, Can a new combi boiler be fitted on an old system? A local plumber has told me that if I have a new combi fitted I will have to have all the pipework and rads renewed because of the added presure and the age of the system (23 years plus) is this right? Two other plumbers have quoted but not mentioned any of this only a…

Gas Central Heating problem
I have just moved into a house with a 10-15yr old Baxi Solo boiler, old radiators and a dial thermostat in the hallway. The system seems to work but its so expensive, I don't know where all the gas is going to, there doesn't appear to be a leak as when I turn the boiler off the gas meter stops. The thermostat is set at 15c…

Do new Combi Boilers waste water
Hi have an old combi with a pilot light. It takes quite a while before the hot water reaches the taps, all the while water is running to waste. The new boilers do not have pilot lights so a fan has to purge the boiler, meaning it will take even longer to get going. Is this going to be a real nuisance? and will it be a…

Renewable heat incentive scheme 2011
It is proposed, that any home "generating" heat from renewable sources will get a rebate for every kW of heat generated. 6p per kW has been suggested. With a COP of >3 it might be free heat in effect. Not sure, details just discussion documents I think.

Gas Central Heating
My Dad (72) lives alone in our family house, it's a 3 bedroomed semi detached place with storage heaters on economy 7. There's no gas to the house but it is up to the end of his driveway so it can be installed readily. Over the past few weeks his house has been so cold, albeit with the extreme conditions, but we started…

Yet another electric heating query ...
Firstly I (sort of) understand that 1KW electricity produces 1KW heat. Apologies for the essay! :o I have an open plan, all electric two bedroom flat, E7 meter and radiant panel heaters. The flat never falls below 12C due to the benefit of the neighbours so I don't really need a mega powerful heating system. The…

Calor Gas - Anyone getting Deliveries
I live in rural Mid Wales and have no mains gas so have to rely on LPG for my heating. I rang Calor on Monday 4th January as my tank was showing a reading of 1/4. (Calor always ask me to ring when it gets to this so they have time to get gas out). I rang again on Monday 11th January to say my tank was now showing 1/8th and…

Cheaper to leave heating on 24/7 or just when home?
Anyone got a formula for calculating this? Just been thinking over the last few weeks about my usage. I work 9-5 every weekday, so only have my heating on between 5am-7am and 5pm-1030pm. But, obviously, in those hours the heating (ASHP) is working flat out trying to bring the house back up to temperature. Presumably there…

Central heating problem?
I've been renting a flat in Aberdeen for the last two and a half years and have started to have a problem with my central heating. I went away over Christmas and came back to find my flat very cold. I figured that the freezing temperatures (-11oC) while I was away just meant the flat needed some time to warm back up again.…
