Help - chasing a bad builder
HiHad an extension done, turns out the builder was one of those doing three jobs at once types, won't bore you with the details but took forever. The electrical inspection has found that the guy didn't install a ring circuit in the kitchen. I've asked him to come back and fix it, set two dates and he hasn't turned up to…

refitting a radiator
I'm going to refit one of our radiators this evening having had the walls plastered and painted, is there a correct orientation for it? Obviously out of the floor are 2 pipes, one with the TRV. Does the bleed on the radiator need to be the same side as the TRV, opposite side, or doesnt it matter? Many thanks

Best lock for bike shed in front of house?
Dear All, My father in law has build a little wooden bike shed in front of the house for which we still need a lock / locks. I think the most stable and convenient way would be one of those locks, where there's a "central" lock (meaning, halfway between bottom and top) which not only locks at the centre, but also has…

New fence- storm damaged
Hi all. In November of 2020 I got several quotes and went with a company I had heard rave reviews on from other people and my parents had used them before. I paid just shy of a grand for 2 sides of my garden to be re fenced 6ft high with boards together. Storm Arwen hits and I wake up to find that some of the fence has…

Insulating a concrete floor
I’m trying to insulate a concrete floor cheaply. I have seen a foil type that you just lay over the floor and under the carpet, It saves having to raise floorboards.... the reviews seem good, but don’t know if I can trust them. Anyone used it or know? Thanks Debbie

Who do I approach for a domestic roof survey?
We have a new roof (from January 2020) on our house (two bed end terrace). We had a couple of slipped tiles and a few damp spots. I want to get a roof survey done to tell us if the builders did a good job or not. Its proving harder than expected. Do I need a roofer? Chartered surveyor? We aren't selling the house. Thanks! T

Dividing attic room with sloped ceiling
I have an attic room I'd like to divide in 2. The ceiling is low and sloped so I was thinking maybe I could attach rails or hooks along each side of the ceiling to hang fabric that would meet at the apex. Note that while I'll need access between the two spaces, the fabric won't need to be drawn back regularly so I don't…

Converting existing bath to walk-in
My elderly parents are thinking of using a company called UDOOR to put a door into their existing bath, converting it into a walk-in bath. Does anyone have experience of this company or know of any problems with doing such a conversion? I have read the posts regarding the drawbacks to walk-in baths, specifically getting…

Fixing my bed base.
Not totally sure the material but the part you lie on appears to be cardboard or plywood that is stapled into the corners of the frame. Last year I damaged one corner of the base when standing on it to change a bulb and just put a heavy item there which worked and planned to fix it at some point, I had the idea for a…

Japanese Pull Saws for Carpentry?
Hi all, I'll soon be fitting new MDF skirting and architrave. I'll also be fitting laminate flooring soon though, and undercutting the existing door linings. Does anyone have any experience with Japanese hand saws? Much finer teeth, cut on the pull (opposed to typical Western saws which cut on the push), and supposedly…

No wonder window salesmen have such a bad reputation... Also, the best route to replacing my windows?
Last year I got a window quote and called the supplier (Crystal Windows) back up to see if I could retrieve that quote. I was told that all information had been deleted for data protection purposes and they only hold quotes for 6 months. Fair enough. I really just wanted a ballpark figure on prices but they were insistent…

Question for boiler plumber (preferably British Gas plumber)
Hi Forum, A British Gas Engineer has just installed me a TF1 Omega Filter. There are two types of installations - with or without isolation valves. Due to the short length of pipe available he installed the 'no isolation-valves' version of the filter. Now the part that is bugging me is that he installed the filter on the…

Worcestor Greenstar Boiler/Smart thermostat
I have a Worcester Greenstar 24i junior combi boiler and a thermostat in the hallway. Shall I always leave it 'on' and then let the hallway themorstat dictate when it heats the water for the central heating? What I don't want is the boiler to be always on for central heating so it's on 24/7 When the boiler is on the 'off'…
