Closing up an unused flue
Our house is late 60's built with a precast class 2 flue
built into the inner skin of a cavity wall. The internal wall is flat i.e. no
chimney breast. I've taken out the gas fire and now want to block up the hole
which is c.85mm deep, 300mm wide and 600mm high. Have thought about timber battens and plasterboard but this…

Central heating - timer vs. room thermostat
I have a gas central heating system here, it's been controlled for years by the "UP2" timer, which has three time-bands to bring on the heating as required. It'll do more than that - 5/2 day different programmes, every day different - but it's configured to do the same every day, which is fine. Room temperatures are…

Central heating is off, Greenstar I
When I turn up the temperature on the thermostat, the heating comes on, at least it used to.It started being intermittent, I could hear the click when it comes, but then when it didn't come on the click was a lot quieter. It doesn't come on at all now. I changed the thermostat on the wall. Just the same.I am guessing there…

Cavity Insulation in neighbours house causing damp in mine
Hello I've recently discovered (via a survey) that poorly fitted Cavity insulation in my neighbour's property (semi-detached) has been causing dampness to my property because no cavity barrier was installed. Their home is council-owned, mine is privately owned. Has anyone experienced a similar situation? Can I claim repair…

what to use to bond hard plastic item, when superglue doesn't work?
Hi there, I have this plastic item, it's one of those height measuring things that you see at doctors. Handy for keeping track of kids heights. Unfortunately my toddler sat on the measuring bit (it's a hard plastic bit that rests on the head to show the height) and broke it. I've attached a photo to get a visual for the…

Knocked old plaster off to find this. What to be done?
I knocked some mouldy plaster off the wall to brick this weekend. I was greeted by a diagonal conduit with wires in it. Can anyone say whether it’s likely to be old? Also, it’s due to be plastered tomorrow so what precautions or advice should the plasterer take? Quite sick of seeing just what seems like bodge jobs in the…

Lawful Development
I run an agricultural business from my premises. I have also lived at the same premises for many years. I built a dwelling on the premises in 2014 and still reside there. Planning enforcement threatened to serve me with an enforcement notice so I applied for a Lawful Development Certificate. I based all of the application…

Buying kitchen appliances ourselves
Our extension is at the stage where we need to pick appliances. We’ve looked at buying ourselves and have visited some local appliance outlets as well as mainstream (Curry’s, John Lewis). Are there other places or reputable websites to buy from (other than ao.com)? There seems to be shortages of German brands (we were…

Heating water in electric immersion heater with boost function only
Hi, I have a cylinder immersion heater and E7 tariff. I don't use much hot water at home atm so I decreased the heating time during the night tariff to two hours. I tried to decrease it more, but then the water was cold in the morning. I was wondering whether I could just heat the water during the night tariff with the top…

Lagging / Insulating Pipework?
Hi all, Some of you will know I'm on a quest to fit new radiators and redo the pipework running up to them. Well, it's all dry fitted now! :) I'll post it all up once its all soldered! #prayfornoleaks Once it is all done, I'll be lagging / insulating some pipework in the loft. Most of the existing pipework up there is…

Boiler vertical flue
My boiler is in my loft and therefore has a vertical flue that exits through the house tiled roof. I have noticed I can see some daylight around the flue where it exits the roof. I presume this isn't right? Surely it should be a tight fitting around the tiles?

Boiler plastic casing vibrating. Can I remove it?
The plastic casing/cover on my boiler is vibrating very loudly when in operation. If I put a small amount of pressure on the casing then it stops, and when I remove the casing then it doesn't happen at all so I'm pretty sure that it the source of the problem. 1. Can I safely keep the case removed completely? Image of…

MDF loft hatch - what insulation to buy?
We have had a lift hatch fitted made out of MDF and have since painted it. To help add a little extra energy efficiency, we want to insulate the loft hatch on the bit that sits inside the loft. What insulation material should we buy (and where from) and how to attach it to the hatch?

Boiler pressure - heat exchanger?
Hi Hoping to get a second opinion here on our boiler issue. It's a Worcester Bosch condensing combi. Symptoms are pressure dropping back to zero within minutes of refill, and at the same time a flow of (warm) water out the condensing outlet. Plumber isolated the boiler to confirm issues was with the boiler and not a leak…

Wood Grenade / Splitter — Lump Hammer vs Sledgehammer?
Hi all, Fancy getting myself one of these little bad boys to help me split logs: https://www.screwfix.com/p/roughneck-wood-grenade-4-way-log-splitter/51334 But, what is best to use – a lump/club hammer, or sledgehammer? I'm thinking about weight, usability and swing. Thanks!

UPVC Windows supply only
Hello, We're looking to replace our windows and had a few quotes from local companies, price difference is quite significant. Pretty much the same profile, glass or make. Do you know if I can buy them directly from manufacturer or they deal only with trade? Something like this https://www.modernupvcwindows.co.uk/ but I'd…

Is the party wall act relevant here?
I am interested in knocking down a few internal walls in my property. Its basically 3 little one storey outhouses with a flat roof all connected and I'd like to knock down the walls so that it makes it a small corridor from our kitchen leading to a small bathroom. We're end of terrace so these little outhouses run along…

Asbestos in fence post concrete?
We spent today digging out some old metal fence posts and breaking up the concrete they were set in with a jackhammer. House is from the 60s and I’m now worried the concrete could have contained asbestos - is this likely?
