can you help me change this floor plan to get a large kitchen with island?
I’ve placed an offer on this house and I’m thinking about renovating this house to get the kitchen/dining space with island I always wanted. I was thinking I would split the reception room and tear down the kitchen walls, replace the conservatory with a proper extension to build a large kitchen/dining with an island space.…

Boiler pressure dropping - should I open the valves?
Happened for years and my workaround was to adjust the valves to get the pressure to the right level. Boiler man came for service recently and replaced a part (think it was the thing that floats inside - forgot the name- he said it was too full of water and replaced it). I explained about the pressure dropping and he said…

Chimney breast sealed. How long till damp?
We're part way through having the old fireplace in our victorian terrace house refurbished. As we're not using it as a fireplace anymore we've had it plaster boarded to make a feature space. The plan was to leave a vent in the top to stop any damp buildup but the builder has gone AWOL half way through the job. How long can…

Flooring aethetics dilemma for mil.
Hi.Mum in law has just found a bungalow to move in to. It has solid-type floors with underfloor heating - great - and currently has old carpet on top which she's going to replace with not-carpet.She has a dawg, so likes the hygiene and easy-to-clean nature of a hard floor such as solid wood, laminate or LVT, so carpets are…

Stripping wallpaper - asbestos?

Advice needed on loft conversion's slightly bowed flat roof
We had a leak which started 24-month ago. It created a visible damp patch and if heavy rain a slow drip leak. Called a roofer who applied a bitumen layer. That seems to stop it for 12-months. Roofer returned and applied a second layer which again stopped the leak. I have now noticed that the roof is uneven though there is…

Best way to insulate the upstairs of my 60s house
I live in a 1960s chalet style, tile hung semi detached house very similar to this. The first floor of my home gets very cold in winter, and it appears that behind the wall tiles, there is little more than a membrane, the baton frame for the tiles and then the plasterboard! I have only had a chance to see when changing a…

Money-saving pressure for the shower
We have a water supply with a big cold-water tank in the loft and hot-water storage in the airing cupboard, like many.
