No heating

We had a service recently and we’ve noticed a little white box next to the boiler keeps flashing red. We have hot water but the radiators all over the house only go luke warm no matter how high we set the thermostat. We’ve checked the pressure and temperature on the boiler for radiators. Also the thermostats on all radiators and all set normally. This has only happened since the service.

Could this be an issue between the boiler and thermostat? I’ve put a repair request in with our boiler cover company and I’m hoping they come out asap because we’ve no heating and I have a chronic illness. Our son has raynauds so he’s really suffering in this cold weather.

  • Hi Luna.
It would really help to see a pic of this 'white box', or at least its name and model number.
From what you say, tho', I suspect it's a wireless receiver for your room thermostat? What make is the thermostat? (Or post a pic of this too...)
It could be that the wireless connection has failed and it needs to be re-linked. Or, if the thermostat unit is battery-powered - very common - that these have run out. Again, we need to know the make.
This white box - how many lights does it have on it (whether lit or not)? And are there any buttons on it? Could one have something like 'override' or 'on' on it?

It does sound like there's an issue with either the wireless receiver and room thermostat.

Thank you. I’ll post a photo in the morning.

If it was the wireless connection issue or battery, when I put the heating on would it even make them luke warm? They’re warming luke warm but nothing more.
  • Ok, I'm off to bed...
If you can see the make of room thermostat, do a 'Google' for instructions.
Two things to look up - the first is how to check the batteries in the thermostat unit - does the display have a low battery icon showing, for example - and the other is how to 'pair' or 'link' the therm with the receiver.
Both of these things should be straightforward to do, and really should become part of your household knowledge base. But totally understand if this is an emergency, and you aren't technically inclined.
(I bet you can manage it, tho' )

In theory, you are right - it simply shouldn't come on at all. Perhaps it's intermittent; it manages a short connecting signal every now and then when you aren't aware of it? Who knows.
But, let's go through a process of elimination. We really need to know what that white box is, and what that light means.

Photo of the box that’s next to the boiler. The top light is green but one below it that says alarm flashes red constantly.

Do we change the battery in this box next to the boiler or the actual thermostat in the hallway?
  • Replace the batteries in the thermostat in the hallway - assuming it is battery-powered (and chances are it is). Most likely they are AA size, possibly AAA.
Definitely NOT in that receiver - that's mains-powered.

Could you post an equally good photo of the thermostat?
  • Meanwhile, pressing button '2' should override the 'stat and turn your heating on. Press it again and it should go off. So you shouldn't be without heating.
(Bear in mind when it's on using the override, it'll stay on until you manually turn it off again by pressing that '2' again. The thermostat won't have any effect.)

Thanks, I will give that a try now. So we will have to always do it like that by pressing 2? Or once batteries replaced we won’t need to press the override  2 button?
