Do carpet fitters remove existing flooring?
I’ve been looking into getting new flooring throughout the house. I understand that fitters are not expected to move furniture or dispose of waste but do they take up existing flooring? The carpet should be fairly straightforward if I have to do it but we have some laminate floor that appears to be glued down. Ideally I’d…

Can you (would you) DIY an RSJ installation?
I seem to be on here a lot, with varying subjects - we are juggling a lot of plates so thanks for bearing with me :-) We are putting an opening in a load bearing wall and have all the Structural Engineer's calculations. We've been waiting for our chosen builder since May last year who had suggested March/April would be a…

Treadmill on ground suspended floor of a terraced house
Hi there. I seen a lot of discussions about putting the treadmill upstairs, but didn't find any discussion about whether it's safe to have a treadmill on a ground floor. My house is an old terraced house built around 1930. We did refurbishment recently and put laminated floor downstairs. The floor is suspended timber…

Making a wooden Lap Tray
I’ve cut out a guitar shape from a fitted wardrobe door. I’m trying to make a lap tray out if it. What I’m trying to figure out is how to stop things sliding off it. The 2 solutions I can come up with are a) cut out a couple of inlays for a plate and cup (but no idea how I’d do it) or b) put some sort of ridge round it,…

murky waters (maybe don't read if you are eating)
Hello everyone; quick question about a very unglamourous drainage problem. Noticed toliets flushing slightly slow and a bit of a pong in the downstairs toliet so checked the outside drain and rodded the proverbial. It does look like the issue is downstream of my house though. When i was trying to flush out the drain most…

Walls: Plaster or Lining Paper?
Hello, We've just had our bungalow fitted with a plethora of additional sockets fitted throughout (prior, it had very few sockets). Our walls are currently old plaster with lining paper over the top. Having had our walls chased out, and a lot of bad lining paper work done by the previous owner, we're going to redo our…

Excessive out of hours building noise
We have new neighbours next door, (in a semi) who told us they were building an extension but didn’t then tell us they were completely gutting the rest of the house and refurbishing it. They’ve worked way over the 8am - 6pm guidelines and the noise has been horrendous, we have politely complained out of hours a couple of…

Cleaning plastic guttering and drain pipes?
The place I've moved into hasn't had any care in the 20yrs since it was built. There are stains from moss, dirt build up and what looks like mastic wiped from a fill many years ago.I can see lots of cleaning stuff online but don't know where to start as they all advertise as 'perfect; - or is there something more household?…

Ronseal matt medium oak varnish - has green hue
Hi everyone, I have put a couple of coats on some softwood shelves (underside) as a test patch and its got a green hue. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have double checked the can and there does not seem to be a mention of a colour tint. The wording for 'Matt' is in green but I seem to recall that being the same for…

Will this mixer tap likely be ok?
Hi folks, I have a mixer tap in bathroom with the pop up waste, hot tap is leaking so I turned it off at valve, however when I screw off little hot cover to dismantle the tap to get to the valve to replace the washer, the screw underneath is totally corroded, so can't get it off, so I think it will be a case of getting a…

How best to construct summer room floor
I’m planning a corner summer room, with each long side being 2.6m long. Currently have a solid concrete base poured that’s level. One colleague has said construct the walls first, place them on a thick dpm on the concrete base, then once fixed together, build the floor inside the walls, also resting on the dpm. another has…

Recycled glass vs quartz kitchen worktops?
Any direct experience of recycled glasswork kitchen worktops? I have no doubt that they are individual and can look stunning, but am wondering about all the things I don't know about them, such as care / maintenance. (I also think they could look dated but in 30 years time I might be ready to replace). Views?

Dishwasher cold water intake
Due to the layout of my kitchen, my dishwasher and washing machine are located side by side and my cold water intake for the dishwasher has this on the end (see picture). Is there anything I can get/do to extend this intake as there is no way it will reach from where it has to go, to the intake. thanks

Advice about foul drainage
It's quite a complicated situation so please bear with me. I live in a ground floor flat, and own the leasehold. I only recently bought it. The council own the freehold, the person above me is a council tenant. A plumber has informed me that a pipe going into my back garden from my bathroom is foul drainage, and is…

Gazco fire
Hi. I've just moved into a new house which has a Gazco Riva2 500 installed in the lounge. The previous owners left some instructions on switching it on. I managed it a couple of times but now all it does is beep for a while, light the pilot, click for a few seconds, beeps again and then pilot goes out and it switches…
