murky waters (maybe don't read if you are eating)

Hello everyone; quick question about a very unglamourous drainage problem.

Noticed toliets flushing slightly slow and a bit of a pong in the downstairs toliet so checked the outside drain and rodded the proverbial. It does look like the issue is downstream of my house though.

When i was trying to flush out the drain most distal from the house i was not meeting resistance; there was some evidence that it may have been helping (but water level not falling) but it definitely didn't seem to be hitting the issue; suggesting the blockage is at least 10 feet past the property.

Hope i'm explaining this properly, could post a diagram of where the sewage drains are.

Would i be as well contacting the council (or more likely NI water) or will they tell me to get the professionals in? Or just keep at it tomorrow?

The council won't want to know.

Is this a private sewer or on the 'grid' ie, is there a water company that looks after your waste?  If they do, what which point is the problem yours or theirs?

What is 10 feet from your property?  Your own land, the highway, another house?

So in northern ireland we have NI water. According to their website

"It may be our responsibility if we have public sewers in the area and at least one of the following applies:

    • The problem is outside your property boundary
    • More than one property is experiencing problems
    • There is widespread sewer flooding in the area"
I'm in a cul-de sac; the furthest drain (assuming it is straight) goes out into the road between the houses if you know what i mean. Theres actually a chance it curves back under my front garden but doubt it would. Haven't heard of anyone else having issues but not sure people would say...it isn't like it is flooding.

I reckon i'll contact NI water, just curious if other people have had similar issues and as you say at what point is it my problem or any tips on how to proceed.

I didn't see the NI in your post but re-reading I can see it at the end of your post.  Perhaps it would have been prudent and more relevant to put it at the start of your post or in your title....

NI is a different ball game to England.

Just a follow up- ni water called and basically said they will send a contractor but if the blockage is in your property you foot the bill which was fair enough. Man out very quickly and found blockage at manhole on the road, and sorted it v quickly. Happy days
