Permitted Development Rules
Hi Just moved into a new house (bungalow) and thinking of having a small (single storey) extension to the front to make a en-suite and utility garage. Are all English developments covered under the same permitted development rules, I can't make head nor tails of the Warrington one where we live so wondered if some other…

Painting Internal uPVC door with F&B eggshell paint
I've just had a new composite door installed and it has a lot of white uPVC trim around the frame. The rest of the room has wooden panelling on the bottom half and we were going to paint it "School House White" from the farrow and ball eggshell range. Is it possible to paint uPVC trim with eggshell paint if you prime it…

Weird smelly patch near radiator
We've moved into our new rental first floor flat three weeks ago. Yesterday, we went into one of the smaller bedrooms and smelt a really bad stale urine smell. Sniffed around (vomit) and noticed it was strongest near the corner of the room. Lifted the carpet up and there was a massive patch under the carpet near the…

Best way to attach gate?
Hi all, I have purchased a pair of wooden driveway gates. Each gate is 6 feet high and 4 feet wide. The plan was to fix gate posts to my house wall and the boundary wall using concrete bolts. However, my dad popped over today and says he's not sure the boundary wall will be able to support the weight. The boundary wall is…

Builders hedge down bottom of the garden
I have an established conifer hedge at the end of my garden and a public footpath runs behind it. All the houses along the row also have rear gates to get to the footpath. Over the past few years a new housing estate has been built behind us. The builders have now got people in to do some planting that will form a very…

Tiling over efflorescence on wall?
Hi, I'm finishing off my kitchen renovation, and about to tile. I have this patch of efflorescence, those fluffy salts about a metre wide right where I want to tile. This is the joint wall between me and and my neighbours, it's a Victorian terraced house. I think the damp that could have caused this may be historic due to…

Pocket and environmentally friendly heating options
Hi Looking for some ideas on heating options for our 1960s house, which has installed a updated gas warm air heating system (about 10-15years old) We're not that unhappy with it, except the fact that the temperature can't be programmed causes issues with it either getting too hot or too cold. There's a dial you manually…

Safestyle - wrong door delivered
We ordered 3 windows and a composite door from safestyle before Xmas. There have been a myriad of issues right from the get go and today after weeks and weeks of waiting for an installation after they mismeasured our windows, we get the door and it has the wrong type of glass. They've not installed the door yet, only the…

My tiler is leveling floor on old adhesive which he can't remove. Is this safe to do?
Hi, I recently purchased a property and the existing kitchen floor porcelain tiles are all moving/cracking and therefore I am getting the floor re-done. My tiler today ripped up all the tiles and noticed that the previous installer put some sort of adhesive all over the wood and then for some reason dot and dabbed the…

Getting a carpenter to copy a bed?
Has anyone got experience with getting a local carpenter to copy bed designs? For example, this bed that I really like is £2,145 in double size made from walnut, which seems overpriced for the material cost and time it should take to make: naturalbedcompany.co.uk/product/hoxton-contemporary-bed/

Original floorboards - not lining up at threshold
Hi all We took up the carpets in our Victorian house and found original floorboards underneath, in a variety of conditions but generally good. We've got some flooring people in currently to replace completely knackered boards, fill small gaps, then sand and lacquer. All seems to be going OK, but they raised a small issue…

Porch size?
We are looking ok building a new porch and would like some thoughts on what the internal porch size. I know the obvious answer is to make it big as possible but unfortunately not possible. So I was thinking it needs to be about 1m depth and 1.5m wide. The reason I'm thinking 1m depth is I don't want to take too much space…

Different Temperatures in Same Room?
I put a thermometer on the floor beside a cupboard in my kitchen. The temperature in the kitchen at 5 feet above floor level is 21 deg C. The temperature on the floor was 15 deg C. Is this to be expected or do I have a draught under the cupboard which I can't feel?
