So by the time I get in its lukewarm. And if I try to top it up with hot water it comes out freezing cold not even warm. If I leave it about 15/20…

'Blown' double glazed wooden windows
Could anyone advise me whether to get wooden windows in my new house repaired/decorated before I get the glazing replaced in some of them? It was built in 1998 and I think by the state of the paintwork downstairs that there might be some rot. Glazer chap says not to risk disturbing newly decorated frames and get the…

Leak through ceiling
Hi, we've noticed we've had leak which has affected the living room and dining room ceiling. (The artex has blown and there is some staining, I think the ceiling is also bowing down a bit but I'm not touching it!). I think it's something to do with the shower as when I mentioned it to my young kids they said yes when i had…

Cost of opening up chimney breast for a range cooker
I wondered if anyone could give me a rough cost if they have done this themselves recently (we are East Midlands). We have recently bought a 1930s semi detached which already has the kitchen and dining room knocked through, however they decided to keep the galley kitchen layout with a breakfast bar between the dining room…

Engineered Oak Floor
Is it recommended to have a solid concrete floor when laying engineered oak herringbone flooring to guarantee a level surface? Half of my kitchen floor is suspended timber frame and the other half, an old extension, is solid concrete. I'm trying to figure out if converting the suspended floor to solid concrete needs adding…

Grass patches on pavement turning into mud - council won't do anything
Hi all, I am not completely sure this is the best place to post this, I apologise in advance if it isn't. The pavement in front of my and my neighbour's house has two little patches of grass, that basically from October to May become two little patches of mud due to cars/vans/lorries driving over them. See pictures I've…

Your repair / Homecare type cover
Hello everyone. I am currently paying £39 per month to Your repair for their Homecare 5 plan. The plan is due for renewal soon so would like to know people’s general opinions of having this type of cover. It does cover the boiler, heating, plumbing, pest control etc but people I speak to say I should just put that money in…

Washing machine tap won’t turn off
Hi I’m moving out of a (rented) house tomorrow, so I tried to disconnect the washing machine to get it ready to move. I turned the blue tap that the washer is connected to into the off position, but when I unscrew the washer hose, water is still flowing so I guess the tap is broken. I tried turning off the stopcock under…

Remove top oven trim of OBI B10 Whirlpool oven
I need to clean the double glass of the oven without removing the door. In some models the top door trim can be removed by unscrewing the screws or through small clicks on the sides. My Whirlpool OBI B10 model no. 000 947 44 has neither. I don't know whether the top oven trim can be just pulled or not. There are two little…

Repairing oak wax finished table.
I have an oak dining table that I love, when I bought it I was given a tub of wax and told to wax it every 6 months. Looking into it now I'm pretty sure I've overdone it over the past few years, too often and too much wax. I have some plastic woven style placemats which have made marks in the wax which you can see all over…

Advice on where to start for a complete beginner!
Hi folks, I'm in the process of buying a first floor flat in SW London. It's a Victorian end-of-terrace house, about 950 sq ft, and it needs complete renovation. I'm planning to do a loft extension at the same time - to get everything done up front, before moving in, while it's an uninhabited building site. When I say…

Getting a new bathroom
I am looking to get a new bathroom and it's turned into a bit of a pain. I have previously contracted someone to do the whole job but they never showed up to actually do it. Now I think I just need to get the stuff ordered from somewhere and find a local builder to fit the bathroom. I don't know why I am finding this…

Roof needs new batton and felt - is this serious or not?
Hi everyone, We have just received a quote for £4.2k + VAT to replace the batton and felt on a roof (3bed Victorian terrace) as the 'felt is very brittle and in a couple of years leaks could start'. We are in Bristol. Just trying to understand is this a serious issue or a fair quote? The quote is for scaffolding, replace…

What is '6-mil poly film'?
I'm considering LVT planks from Costco on a concrete floor. The installation guide says: Concrete subfloors must have a minimum of 6-mil poly film between the concrete and the flooring What does 6-mil mean in metric terms? 6 mil polyfilm in Google brings up US based suppliers, with what looks like a thin vapour barrier.…
