Garage door replacement. Roller or side hung??

Hi there,
does anybody know anything about garage doors?? We are having the back of our garage converted and leaving the front of it as a store. It will be too small to keep our current up & over door so we are looking for a replacement. We’ve been really amazed by the cost so are thinking we might try installing it ourselves to keep costs down.
Can anybody give any advice on what type would be the easiest for us to fit? We are looking at either side hung or roller as these seem to be the only types that would work for this small space. Also, any points about either of these types that we may not have thought of. Any recommendations of companies? Or we could just go for something from a diy store?
any advice appreciated. We are going around in circles!
Thank you.

I removed the up and over door in my last garage and replaced it with two side opening wooden doors - there was easy access (couldn't use the garage to store a car) when it was raining etc so I could retrieve stuff easily. I loved that garage!
I have recently moved and once again I can't access my garage for car storage so I am planning on putting a wooden shingle front on it with a double glazed door to one side - this way I can access the garage storage easily, have a bench in front of the left hand side and secure access. I can see it in my minds eye and will get my builder to price up for me when he's done my loft conversion.0 -
I've got a electric roller door that is very compact when open and very secure when shut.
I think its a professional job to install - my general builder wouldn't touch it. Get quotes from local independents - ignore the one that advertise in the national magazines.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
i got a DIY roller door from rollerdor norwich, can't remember what it cost (but you price it up on line)
easy enough to fit if there are 2 of you (my one 12ft wide)
the biggest problem was not having enough space to slide it in with the legs on, we lifted & supported the roller then tried to fit the" legs" it was a lot of pain trying that way as there are holes at end of legs (right one/wrong one) the lug on the roller kept going into the wrong hole, we were tight on space so could not see until it was struck in wrong hole
also problem with motor setup, check the motor direction before fitting it,0 -
We recently converted the rear two thirds of our garage into a store room. It is non habitable as it has no window.
We sited the partition sufficiently far back to allow us to retain the up and over garage door.
Can you do the same or do you want a bigger rear section?A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".0
