Best way to attach gate?

Hi all,
I have purchased a pair of wooden driveway gates. Each gate is 6 feet high and 4 feet wide. The plan was to fix gate posts to my house wall and the boundary wall using concrete bolts.

However, my dad popped over today and says he's not sure the boundary wall will be able to support the weight. The boundary wall is a single brick wall, with some decorative bits. Pictures below.

Do you think this wall will be able to support the weight? There are 2 concrete posts, would I be able to fix the gate post to them? If so will my concrete bolts work?

Ps. The current gate is attached to a rotten wooden post between the first concrete post and the wall

No, the wall won't take the weight. For a 6'x4' gate you are going need a seriously substantial post sunk into the ground.

Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • How heavy will the new gates be? Is it an open-slat design or solid? You might get away with fitting a 3'-er to the wall and a 5'-er to the house to make up your 8'?

Is that existing post on the end of the wall tall enough anyway?

OP has already bought the gates as far as I can see.

You don't give the makeup of the new gates but 6ft high x 4ft wide isn't going to be supported by that wall.  A post sunk in the ground would be the way I would go.

Yes I already have the gates. Plan was to attach a 3x3 post to each wall and hang the gates off them.
The wooden post would end up being about a foot taller than the wall!
Looks like I will have to dig the post in.

Also the gates are framed, with tongue and groove. So do weigh a fair bit!

When you hang them use adjustable hinges - they will move.

You may well want a 4" post by the wall. Don't forget, there will be a lump of concrete down there for a foundation strip. Depending on how well the wall was constructed, it might be 150mm out and the same deep.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • I've seen a couple of fairly large gates that have a wheel on the bottom to take a bit of the load from the hinges and supporting post. Something like this:
