Porch size?

We are looking ok building a new porch and would like some thoughts on what the internal porch size. I know the obvious answer is to make it big as possible but unfortunately not possible.

So I was thinking it needs to be about 1m depth and 1.5m wide. The reason I'm thinking 1m depth is I don't want to take too much space from the driveway.

And I thought 1.5m width would work because half of that would take the door opening and the other 0.75m would be sufficient to have a shoe storage space.

Any thoughts?

  • Have any other houses down your street built porches?
I would check it out and knock on the door and ask how hey get on!!
I recently moved house and used to have a porch in my old home and my new place doesn't have one. I miss having a porch and there is a gorgeous one down the road so i knocked on the door and had a scout! The owner was lovely and shared her builder's details etc.

That could be tricky with the current Covid situation unless the OP knows the neighbour well.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Will 1m depth give you enough room to open the outer door after shutting the inner one and without hitting yourself or getting tied up in the shoes?  You can get narrow double doors if needed.

  • I agree with @theoretica we had exactly this issue and you could get trapped in our old porch because it wasn't deep enough.
If you went out of the house and closed the front door behind you without first opening the porch door, if you'd forgotten your keys you were stuck in the porch!

I also agree, we had a porch that wasn't deep enough so to solve the problem the previous owners had made the porch door open outwards. This meant it was exposed to more weather than it normally would be and was constantly shrinking & expanding and therefore not fitting properly.
  • a standard 900mm door composite has a 813mm (2ft 8inch) slab and opens inwards around 825mm from the inside of the frame . Check this if you have a step sticking out from your house door . If your thinking of a brick and your meter starts from the inside of the brickwork your porch will be close to 1250mm outside (approx. 1150 inside frame) your door edge would still give you about a foot before it reaches the house .  Advice . Plan it properly and plan porch size to driveway size and understand the thickness of the chosen material you are using .
