Getting a carpenter to copy a bed?

Has anyone got experience with getting a local carpenter to copy bed designs?
For example, this bed that I really like is £2,145 in double size made from walnut, which seems overpriced for the material cost and time it should take to make: naturalbedcompany.co.uk/product/hoxton-contemporary-bed/

If you end up having no luck, I can attest to the quality and customer service from that company. I bought a futon and bed from there long ago.

Get quotes to see how they compare. Carpenter is a vague term generally referring to construction work, try a cabinet or furniture maker. Walnut isn't cheap and there will be a cost for finishing the bed.

Getting a bed hand made to order, in walnut to the fit and finish of the one you've linked to is unlikely to be much cheaper tbh. You mention cost of material and time but your forgetting the skill and experience of a trained cabinet/furniture maker. The fact that that particular bed has a price it has is more down to the economies of scale in it's manufacture which a single craftsman won't be able to achieve.3

Out of interest, how much do you think this bed should cost?parkingadvice1212 said:Has anyone got experience with getting a local carpenter to copy bed designs?

I'd be looking for a joinery company for such a job rather than a carpenter.neilmcl said:
Agreed. No harm in looking around of course but I doubt you'll find a custom job any cheaper on a truly like-for-like basis.Getting a bed hand made to order, in walnut to the fit and finish of the one you've linked to is unlikely to be much cheaper tbh. Also, I'd be looking for a joiner rather than a carpenter.
Good luck - let us know if you are successful.0 -
That's the approximate cost of most of the other wood selections shown - but walnut is a rarer, slower growing wood, and therefore commands the higher price tag.parkingadvice1212 said:

I'm not sure you're going to get much off by trying an independent cabinet maker/joiner though.0 -

£230 for simply nailing some pallets together? I hope no one falls for that oneknightstyle said:

It's Etsy, trust me someone will probably buy that pallet bed for that price.parkingadvice1212 said:

*I'm a big fan of Etsy, especially for things like custom made greetings cards for weddings,. Whilst there is some overpriced tat, there is also a wealth of better made, less expensive custom items on there, than that example indicates.
A couple of weeks ago I reported someone for selling a white Ikea lack coffee table worth £17 for £95 (labelled as "designed in our own nordic design studio") but some people believed it, as they'd apparently sold 2 already.
