Is it worth spraying my upvc windows?
We are having our house rendered and are wanting to change the colour of our windows to grey. Presently we have 20 year old georgian bar windows in white. There is nothing wrong with the frames themselves but the georgian bar is dated and has to go. Is it worth having the glass replaced and the windows sprayed or should I…

Adhesive/Sealant for Dishwasher Detergent Dispenser
Hello DIYers. My dishwasher detergent dispenser broke so I decided to replace it. I order an official part, but after fitting in it now leaks inside the door. I took it out and reinstalled it, watching multiple videos but it still leaks. So I was wondering, is there an adhesive/sealant I can use to stop the leaking? I…

SAP Excess Glazing Calculation for Extension
Hi Folks, I'm re-building the side return extension on a terraced house. By re-building (long story), currently existent is something which is half a conservatory (translucent roof) and half an extension (integrated heating, no doors into it). To me it doesn't seem compliant with any regs (not noted by my surveyor or…

How to keep squirrels off the house
Was out looking up at the outside of the house (top half is pebble dashed, 1930’s build) and noticed a squirrel, clung on for dear life, on the pebble dash just under the guttering looking down at me. Then it carried on around the house, under the gutter and onto next doors house aside from a pellet gun (joking), or an…

'Formica'-type laminate sheet.
I'll be looking into doing a kitchen refurb early next year, so researching what I can use as worktop for what are unusual sizes and shapes - base unit depths vary from 400mm to 700mm, and step in and out. I'm quite taken by this oxidised/worn copper look;…

Changing a 2 plug to a (more) plug faceplate?
So i was looking at installing new plugs in to a room and what is involved in doing that. Are floorboards needing ripping up, are walls needed to be hammer and chiselled open and then re-plastered. Then someone came in and said about changing the faceplate from one that has 2 sockets on it to one that has 3 or 4. I think…

Flat roof vs Pitched roof cost
Hi all - I've got an extension nearing it's end that's being built by a local builder. The original plans had a pitched roof, but after realising the architect had not accounted for the right pitch roof actually fitting below the upstairs window, we had no option than to go for a flat roof. At the time the builder said it…

Am I being ripped off?
We've moved into our own home and to be honest, we're fairly clueless when it comes to what things should cost etc. We had some work done in one room that had to be redone 3 times due to cowboys (despite them having excellent reviews online and us feeling like we'd done adequate research!) and now we're feeling quite…

New kitchen
Hello all - we've just bought our first place and you have all helped me to no end....so here I am again! We need a new kitchen and have just visited Wren, as we wanted them to design it for us. They've done a great job. Now - how do I play the game? I understand I'd be very foolish to simply accept their offer, but how do…

Help with our washing machine waste?
There is probably such a simple solution to this, but we’re both so tired and worn out we can barely put our shoes on the right feet right now! Moved in last week, went to plumb the washing machine today, and got a bit stumped. At the old house the machine was in an outbuilding, and the waste pipe from the machine just fed…

Noise from flat upstairs
Hi all, In need of legal advice please... I am currently living in a ground floor flat (property owned) and above me there are tenants who have recently moved who make anti-social noise, past 11pm. They can also be heard walking around throughout the day, slamming doors etc, and they have also left a lot of rubbish (bin…

New boiler fitted but pressure keeps dropping
Wonder if anyone can help/advise while we wait for the pros to come round tomorrow! So a couple of weeks ago we had a new (Baxi) combi boiler fitted as our old one was leaking (we'd been smelling rotten egg). Boiler is in the bathroom. After a week of it being fitted, the heating didn't come on and the pressure had dropped…

Suggestions for a new door please
The side door into MIL's garage is down a couple of steps, with the result that the bottom of the door is frequently saturated with water. The door needs replacement, but I am struggling to find a door that won’t rot and isn’t all that expensive. Any suggestions please?

Can I still use a covered extractor fan?
I have a bathroom extractor fan connected to the light pull. The wind that comes through it is terrible, so I have covered it with a stretchy silicone rubber lid! It works a treat, but is there any danger in operating the fan whilst it is covered/ blocked? I can't expect the family to remove and replace the lid every time…

Removing Styrofoam from under American fridge freezer
Hi, we got a new American fridge freezer today. It's our first one so I didn't appreciate the effort required in unpacking /installing so didn't select a service by retailer. I have removed most of the packaging and it has roller but there is a 2 inch thick Styrofoam at bottom and I cant figure out how to remove it without…
