Is it worth spraying my upvc windows?

We are having our house rendered and are wanting to change the colour of our windows to grey. Presently we have 20 year old georgian bar windows in white. There is nothing wrong with the frames themselves but the georgian bar is dated and has to go. Is it worth having the glass replaced and the windows sprayed or should I just get new windows? The window spraying companies tell me to spray and the double glazers tell me to replace (obviously!!). If I have them sprayed it will have to be down after the rendering, and if I have them replaced then it needs to be done before the rendering so I need to make my mind up soon!!

  • Our local pub was renovated during lockdown and the landlady painted her upvc windows grey.  I was sceptical but it actually looks very good and they look like new windows.  She said she used a 'specialist paint' no idea of the make.  Could painting them yourself be an option?

I'd wait a year or 2 if you can and see how all these grey spray jobs are faring up.
at the minute it seems like a good way to smarten the house up if you intend on selling it, but I don't see the paint staying on that long. I've seen doors that are less than 6 months since being sprayed and are already chipped, scratched and marked showing large white patches. might last a little while longer on a first floor widow, or just anything but doors I suppose.

  • I used Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Water Based Paint Gloss over both wood (previously painted with Dulux exterior Gloss (Solvent based)) and PVC-U in early spring this year, using a brush. So far, I am VERY impressed. Stuck to both very well, and seems more flexible than the Dulux exterior. Granted early days, but so far so good.

  • Hi JJ.

I don't think I'd replace the glazing units and have it painted - by the time you've done that, you might as well have brand new windows fitted.

If the white Georgian bars (I presume they are inside the D-G units?) will look ok with grey frames (they might, you never know...), then by all means have the frames painted. But, to do both seems silly as the total cost cannot be far off the cost of completely new windows?

For new windows, keep local, get personal recommendations, get at least three quotes, and listen carefully to the representatives; are they interested in what you want?
