'Formica'-type laminate sheet.

I'll be looking into doing a kitchen refurb early next year, so researching what I can use as worktop for what are unusual sizes and shapes - base unit depths vary from 400mm to 700mm, and step in and out.

I'm quite taken by this oxidised/worn copper look; https://www.wickes.co.uk/Rouille-Zenith-Compact-Worktop-3000x610x12-5mm/p/148757 and thinking it might go well with charcoal fronts. Since I already have very solid tops (double layer of 18mm chipboard and tiles...) I would be able to get away with gluing a thin laminate sheet on top - the worktop edges will have a wide timber trim added to cover whatever I use.

If I could get this sort of finish in just the actual 2-3mm laminate sheet, it would aid installation and likely be cheaper too, but don't know what options there are for this.

Are there many 'Formica'-type sheets available these days?

Thanks.

Formica do sell sheets, but generally only to worktop manufacturers and other high volume customers. Don't think they do anything for the retail market.
You may well end up having to go for a preformed (laminate) worktop. Here is one quite a bit cheaper - https://www.worktop-express.co.uk/laminate-worktops/copper-worktops-copper-effect-laminate-worktops

  • Thanks, FB.

I had seen that one and it is certainly well priced. I'd have to see it in the flesh as it looks redder and darker on the screen compared to the other top - not so much what I was after, I don't think.

    Cheers.

Those were the days, my first kitchen in 1976 was all chipboard and Formica! I hadn't realised you don't see Formica sheets now until you mentioned it.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

If you go direct to the worktop manufacturer, they will send out free samples.
Or you can get free samples direct from Formica, but it can be tricky matching their codes to those of the worktop manufacturers/suppliers.

  • Thanks FB - I'll do that.

Formica still exists, but I just thought there would be others too - it's a huge market. I know most come applied to backing panels, but shoorley there's a call for just 'sheets' too?
