'freestanding' integrated fridgefreezer
Hello all, I'm in the processing of buying my first house and should be moving in roughly 4 weeks. The property has been empty for a few months so no issues there with the current situation. My plan was going to be to renovate the kitchen before moving in, but who knows when that may be. In said renovation the plan is to…

Hole in window sill/floor
Hello I hope someone has some advice for me :) We had a leaky gutter which caused a hole in the french doors window sill (obviously left too long!) Gutter has now been fixed and hole sealed from outside so the area is all dry. Thinking to use wood filler and paint but is it too big for this? Other thing I can think of is…

Turning an existing doorway into an archway?
I am getting my kitchen replaced soon, along with a lot of redecoration work throughout the rest of the house and am wondering if it is worth looking into the above. My kitchen currently has a doorway entrance with no door - it's a very small space and a door would just get in the way so it was just removed, leaving the…

Paving over existing paving
I'm currently in the process of a much needed garden reno and wanting a new path laid with limestone slabs. It's been recommended that I pave over the existing old crazy paving which seems very solid and has been down for years but is not level. The sub-base looks like it might be partially made of bricks. Hoping to get…

Mediation as a first option?
Hi, I wondering if anyone has any ideas on where we go next. We employed a building company to renovate our house and the work started in October. There was no one on site for weeks and work was extremely slow, when they did show up-they would often only work one or two days a week or a few hours a day. We accepted this at…

Extension planning?
Hi All, I have just purchased a house and currently renevating it. It's a 1960s build and in the 80s the old owner put a small single storey extension on the back at half the width of the house. Because if it's age we didn't get any papers for it, acceptable aparantly. Now we want to build a second extension to the side of…

Wet plaster around shower tray
Having ongoing issues with the plaster around the shower tray. From what I can ascertain the water is getting behind the silicone at the bottom of the tiles and then cannot get out at any other part until it reaches the plaster at the end. It all appears dry underneath apart from these end points. I replace the silicone…

Mystery water ingress
We pulled up the carpet to decorate the room and discovered this joy. It's slightly damp and went unnoticed due to the carpet backing. The far wall is external and I think the water has been tracking from there towards the bedroom chimney. There is a small amount of powdery mildew on the boards but they seem sound, to I'll…

Capping off waste water outlet
I know that the yellow thing under our kitchen sink is intended for a washing machine or dishwasher, and the previous owner left it 'capped' with duct tape. What I don't know is what I actually need to properly plug it. Yellow pipe measures 3/4" across. I'm not sure if something like this will work as I can't find…

What's the best brand for swappable-battery cordless DIY products?
Hello everyone. We're a pair of Brexiles living in northern Sweden. We've just bought a rural house with a large barn and mechanic's workshop (including a car lift, which is something I never thought I would own). We are going to need to do a lot of renovations, and in the near future, I'm also going to want to be to able…

Help, plumbers invoices for apparent leak on my water supply pipe
Hi all, I need some advice on an issue we're having with a leak that we had on a shared supply pipe. The shared supply pipe feeds 6 different terrace properties with our property being the last in the run of 6. I understand that from speaking to my neighbours that the supply pipe would have originally run down the back of…

Cost of replacing electrical cable?
Hello My light in bathroom is gone. It looks like it may be an issue with connection to the switch and cable may need to be replaced. What should I expect to pay for this? I know it is difficult to say without seeing the job but I am after rough estimate. It will be difficult to get multiple tradesmen to quote in current…

Tradesmen quote websites
Hi all without risking too much by way of product placement and respecting the current situation, I was wondering what are the best websites for touting for potential building jobs for when all this is over. Have had a surveyor over today for a potential insurance claim (no joy there of course). It involves the render…

Green broadband cabinets - do they need planning permission?
I am interested to know the process Openreach have to go through when installing green broadband cabinets in public streets? Lots are appearing near to me, so would they consult nearby property owners first? What rights do property owners have if they are unhappy? I'm guessing they wouldn't just put a cabinet outside…

New build problems
We bought a new house from Burkhard homes in May 2018 , initially the snags were dealt with by the site manager and he was really on the ball. After about 8 months he left the company and I cannot find a contact for Burkhard homes in the uk. There are a couple of issues that were reported to him whilst he worked for them…

Fridge freeze over icing
My LG GR 252SBD fridge freezer is freezing up at the back. At the back there is hole, where water seeps out, this is freezing. It's over 15 years old, not sure if its auto defrost, but surely this should not freeze up. I guess I will try to empty it and totally defrost it, that was probably done last year.
