Damp
I have a 1930’s semi which had a single storey extension for a new kitchen added at the back in 2016. This year the wall where the extension joins the old house has become visibly very damp, up to quite a high level. So far I have had 3 reports from damp surveyors: 1 & 3 pointed to a leaking joint under the sink, which had…

What type of timber is the cheapest?
Hi all. I'm making a garden compost bib and was going to use old pallets but they're proving to be a nightmare to take apart as I need a fair bit of wood. I want to look in to how much it would be to buy the wood before I decide on whether to continue with the pallet thing but I'm struggling to find out what the cheapest…

Fix or replace multi fuel stove door
Two of the bolts holding the glass onto the front of our stove have snapped. Is there a way to fix this, or replace the door as it can't be used now as it won't hold the glass securely. The only place I can see online for replacement doors are almost as expensive as replacing the full stove.

I have unsightly Gas Pipes feeding my meter and boiler in the pantry along with some loose wires, i have had several people in to find a possible solution including Cadent and British Gas. Kerb Drop Wakefield Yorkshire Advice
Hi all Basically I've applied to Wakefield Council for a kerb drop, paid the £99 application fee. They said I'm allowed to get it done by an accredited builder, fine. Only want the kerb dropped, no work on the driveway needs doing as it's already suitable for car parking. Could anyone give me some rough prices on what they…

Are kitchen taps interchangeable with bathroom sink (not bath) taps in terms of fitting sizes etc?
I am re-doing the bathroom and need a mixer tap for the basin. I've found one I like but it is really sold for the kitchen sink. Are they interchangeable in terms of the sizes of fittings, plumbing needed and so on? (The bathroom has mains pressure hot and cold water with an unvented cylinder). I realise kitchen taps tend…

Internal painting questions
Each time we've decorated a room in our house we've had various issues with the decorators so this time I've decided to give it a go myself. It's only painting, no papering. The walls have been freshly plastered with metals beads on the corners, tomorrow I plan to visit Screwfix and pick up some items to start. I'm going…

Garden Slope Issues with Persimmons
Hi all! Typical persimmons issue coming up... I moved into my 4 bed house last october, during the meeting where we went over the plans they informed us there would be a slight gradient at the bottom of our garden. When we moved in we where greeted with a large slope that we can't let our daughter go down on her own. When…

Hot water coming on with central heating?
This might be the dumbest question ever but please bear with me - I’ve never had central heating and my Google fu is failing me. I will contact my letting agent obviously if there is an issue. Just moved house. Tried out the central heating yesterday, radiators heated fine. The hot water was definitely off (and definitely…

Amtico or can I go cheaper for the same sort of thing?!
We are currently fitting our kitchen diner and will need new flooring. This could (it does at the moment) extend into our hallway. It is a reasonable sized area as we live in Victorian house. We have laminate Quik Clik wooden flooring at the moment. Looks nice (or it did!) but is now chipped in places and the dog slips a…

Radiator Valves
Hi all Moved into a new house over summer and just put heating on today. Some of the rads weren't working as the flooring guy who put the wood down had turned off the valves. I've managed to open some of them but 3 valves are stuck and wont move at all. The thermostatic side is fine- its the other side with the metal bit I…

Electricity (lights and plugs) not working in Loft Conversion but work in rest of house
Hi, I would really appreciate some advise, we have family staying with us at the moment in our spare room (which is a loft conversion). Underfloor heating help
Morning all. We have a new house which has underfloor heating (piped) throughout the ground floor and radiators upstairs. We have noticed recently as the weather gets colder that the upstairs radiators come on fine and we feel warmth upstairs but when we come downstairs it is cold. We have a thermostat in the hallway but…

Urgent electrical question
Hi all Just went to empty to washing machine, to find that it's still full of water. No power coming through to it at all. Also, the tumble dryer next to it isn't working. They both take their power from an extension cable (nothing else plugged into it) that runs to a socket on the wall. I've checked the consumer unit - no…

Hot water
Hi I need to replace my gledhill pulsacoil hot water cylinder which is faulty after 8 years - they do not seem to be built to last. I would like your opinion on unvented cylinders please. Which are the best makes that are unlikely to leak like my gledhill? Why would I choose an unvented cylinder over a vented cylinder?

Impact noise neighbours upstairs
Hi everyone, I recently bought a flat and in the lease it doesn’t say anything about carpet or underlay to be installed. When I first moved here I didn’t have neighbours upstairs however they have recently moved in and I can hear absolutely every single step. I tried speaking with the management company however they say…
