Would I regret getting a 5 kW woodburner?
Thinking about getting a woodburner for our front room. Leaning towards a 5 kW one to save having to put in a vent, but I’m not sure if I’d come to regret it and wish I’d gone with a higher capacity one. The room is 5 * 4.6 m with about a 3.25 m ceiling. It’s an Edwardian mid-terrace, mostly single glazed and not terribly…

All sorts of plumbing advice please!
Hi! First time poster 😊 I live in a rented cottage with a private water supply. Last week we ran out of water altogether for 3-4 days. Apparently the water table is very low after dry summer and there was also a leak which has since been repaired. We now have water again, but pressure is too low for electric shower to…

20mm or 30mm quartz worktop?
Finalised the kitchen design but now deciding on worktop. Standard seems to be 30mm but quartz company suggested that 20mm is more ‘modern looking’. Just wondered what everyone else decided on and why?

I've recently bought my first home and the whole house is in need of renovation. I am already in the process of removing and planning…

Downstairs loo (opposite end of house) help and advice please?
Hi all, We would like to install a downstairs toilet and basin in our old pantry. It would be at the front of the house and our current bathroom is upstairs at the back of the house which means we couldn't add it to the soil stack. Is there a way around this? We don't want a saniflo system as we don't intend on living here…

Fix squeaking tongue and groove floor
I'm preparing a subfloor to put down laminate flooring. A large section in the middle of the floor squeaks when walked on and I'd like to fix it before the new floor goes on top. The floor boards are tongue and groove and the gaps between them seem to have been filled with some sort of glue a long time ago. I've screwed…

Space-saving door ideas
Hi In our smallest bedroom we have a built-in cupboard with a doorway measuring 74cm width by 197cm height. At the moment it's got a normal door on it but we want to put a single bed in front of the cupboard if possible. We can only do this if we can find a new door that doesn't eat into the room space when opened. The…

Triton Shower stops after a minute
Hi all, I bought and installed a Triton shower about 1.5-2yrs ago and it's been working fine for all this time. Over the past few weeks it's been cutting out more and more to the point now when it's turning off after a 30-60seconds. I did wonder whether it might be lower water pressure now that it's cooled outside, so I…

Recommend a gloss handleless kitchen
Hi all We are looking for a handleless kitchen. Can anyone recommend one that’s good value? We are after a style that does not use the J style doors. Shame diy kitchens only supply J doors. Any help and advice much appreciated. Also for gloss doors which is better laminate or lacquered? Thanks

Ash & earth quarry tile floor
Pulled up a carpet and found a quarry tiled floor laid on what I believe is an ash & earth floor. House was built in 1920’s and has been empty for 2 years. My question is, can this floor remain without issue if uncovered or should it be removed. I’d like to keep it as long as its not going to cause problems.

New shed felt losing grit
Hi all I'm currently making an outdoor cat house, as odd as that sounds. I've bought some shed roof felt from Homebase to cut in to small shingles. Each course was tacked with felt nails and the ends stuck down with outdoor "no more nails". It all looked great on day one, but after a few days of being outside there are…

Which boiler? Ideal or Worcester?
Hi everyone, We are looking to get a new boiler and after some research, I’m struggling to decide which one is better! Our heating engineer has recommended the Ideal Logic+ Combi C30 boiler as he says this is their top range one (7 year warranty) and the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i Combi Gas boiler. He’s advised us the…

Flickering MR11 LED bulbs
The entire ground floor of our house is lit by 12v MR11 spotlight fittings, 37 in total. I've tried changing all the bulbs from halogen to LED, 24 of the fittings work fine with LEDs but 13 flicker to varying degrees. Short of changing the transformers is there anything I can do to get around the problem, eg are there…

To buy and renovate or not?
I am looking at buying my first property. I've seen a place that should be well within my budget and is in an excellent location, both for me personally, but also for resale purposes (not that I'm planning on selling up soon). It's a one bed ground floor flat, with 6 other small flats in the same building. It's not big,…
