20mm or 30mm quartz worktop?

Finalised the kitchen design but now deciding on worktop. Standard seems to be 30mm but quartz company suggested that 20mm is more ‘modern looking’.
Just wondered what everyone else decided on and why?

30mm is the lowest profile I would go personally. I think the 20mm worktops look a bit anemic and not in proportion to most styles of cupboard door.

It depends somewhat on your choice of kitchen though. Any pictures or examples?

We’re going for Matt white handless from diy kitchens. That’s my worry with the 20mm, I don’t want the worktops to look as though we’ve scrimped on them for the sake of £400 difference.

Budget kitchens (read "cheap") usually have 28mm laminate worktops whilst the better quality ones use 38mm laminate or 40mm wood.

A 20mm worktop of any material sounds way to thin....

I'd suggest going for the thicker worktops. If you get the 20mm and regret it you'll have to look at them everyday and kick yourself. 30mm is more standard and not a thickness anyone could exactly criticise.

I've just put a 12mm worktop on a recent project.

The less standard sizes have more of a 'designed' look to them. I'd have picked the thinner top, because it doesn't look like everyone else's down the street.

30mm for me too. I hate the look of thinner worktops.
  • Depends on how its detailed, if there's a decent shadow gap between the top of the doors and the units then the thinner worktop can look really good.
