Downstairs loo (opposite end of house) help and advice please?

Hi all,

We would like to install a downstairs toilet and basin in our old pantry. It would be at the front of the house and our current bathroom is upstairs at the back of the house which means we couldn't add it to the soil stack.

Is there a way around this?

We don't want a saniflo system as we don't intend on living here forever and everyone hates them!

We have a manhole across the drive (which is currently dug up) so could connect to that but what about a soil stack pipe? We couldn't have one down the front of the house because we have a porch.

Thanks in advance.

  • Depending on pipe lengths you may not need a vented soil stack but can have an air admittance valve (AAV) in the downstairs cloakroom. A qualified plumber will be able to advise.

Could you take soil pipe out of the side of the house and run it down the side to the house to meet the soil pipe at the rear? If you can provide enough fall (9mm per meter) and the distance to the soil stack is 6 metres or less, this will work and be allowed.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Owain - Thank you. I've seen a few threads mentioning the AAV so I will definitely mention this to my plumber, and fingers crossed this is a viable option! Plumbers have been reluctant to give me a proper answer up until this point. Hence why I'd like to have some sort of idea what I'm talking about so I can ask direct questions!

Tacpot12 - We couldn't go through the side internally or externally as it would mean digging up concrete floors internally and externally, it would have to go across the front of the house, all the way down the side and meet at the rear (the soil stack the furthest it could possibly be from the old pantry we intend on converting to a downstairs loo).

I'm optimistic something can be done because when I explained I wanted a downstairs loo there in the future my plumber suggested running the hot and cold ready.
