Replace retro central heating timer and room stat with new ones?

I have a retro Stelrad Ideal W wall-mounted boiler that was installed in our house 1982 and controls both heating and hot water. Radiators are fed via micro-bore pipes through the house.
Apart from the boiler having had a couple of thermocouples fitted over the years; the boiler and radiators all work fine.

We have been told by a plumber because of the micro-bores pipes already in place if we opted for a new boiler all the micro-bores pipes would need to be replaced (so because of the scale of work involved this is has been put on hold for now).

In the mean time I would like to replace the central heating programmer (the clock dial no longer works - meaning it can only be used by manually flicking on and off the switches for CH + HW). Could the clock dial just be replaced as an option?

I have a new SIEMANS Landis & Staefa RWB2E Programmer which I bought off E-bay a couple of years ago which I was told could replace my existing central heating programmer. (A digital replacement would be nice though)

Also our retro G.E.C room therostat control dial no longer works - it no longer clicks at the desired temperature thus making the temperature control function redundant.

Please look at the pictures attached?

Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated - thanks...

If you put the link in as text with no http it should display but not be clickable.

In many cases a new boiler would be able to reuse the existing microbore piping and radiators, assuming the pipe is adequately sized for the radiators. New condensing boilers operate at a lower temperature, so you need slightly larger radiators (and hence pipes) for the same heat output.

In most cases newer programmers and thermostats will replace the older ones (often you can get a new programmer to fit on the old timer base) but newer programmers may need an interlock set in programming or wiring, depending on whether you have completely separate CH and HW, or just HW and HW+CH settings.

I would suggest you ask for a quote from a competent plumber and bin that "new" antiquated programmer and get a modern one.

You need to know which each of the cables do and control, if your not comfortable or competent to do that then I would agree with missile and pay someone to come in and take care of it.
  • Your photos aren't clear enough to see the wiring and which terminal does what. It's not an industry standard backplate either. An electrician would be able to test that out with a meter in a few minutes.

(I hope the green/yellow wire hasn't been used for any purpose other than earth.)

At the timer your connections should be live, neutral, HW on and CH on.

At the roomstat your connections should be live, CH on, and possibly a neutral.
