Why is my house cold?
Hi All, I'm sure this topic has been covered once or twice on MSE before but didn't want to drag up old threads :) So yeah... my house is cold. I live in a north facing house so I wouldn't expect it to be roasting but it's still a little bit cold for my liking. The house has: -Double glazing -Cavity Wall Insulation -Loft…

Banging noise in cylinder tank
Hi Everyone I hope someone can help. My house has two levels and I have a cylinder tank in the attic. When I run the hot water I get an awful banging sound from the tank. Bit like the start of East Enders. There's no sound when I run the cold tap. I'm sure the pressure is wrong - is there anything I can do about this…

Gas Fireplace - knob not turning
I have a gas fireplace. Gas is coming through, but the knob (on the right of the image) isn't turning. Is there an easy fix to this? Google has not helped at all and I don't really want to pay to get someone out if it's something I can fix myself. Thanks!

New shower not draining - HELP!
Hi, I had a new en-suite installed recently with a low profile large shower tray. The guys that did the job made a whole stack of mistakes including connecting the hot and cold supplies the wrong way round and then blaming the shower as being faulty! Anyway, the shower waste doesn't drain away fast enough, so after 2-3…

Re-pointing
Hi, can anyone give an idea of cost of re-pointing? Side wall with no windows or doors. Scaffolding already in place as next door being done. Didn't realise it needed doing until I went up the scaffold for a look so no issues indoors but it is clear this wall wasn't done when the front and back of the house were.

Is it possible to cut laminate width and fit edging strip?
Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer me any advice please. I finally came up with a kitchen design that I'm happy with. It has a peninsula which is about 710mm in width (in order to house a stowaway for my free standing washing machine). A designer said it would work well in real wood worktops as they do a standard 720mm…

Underlay for vinyl on uneven floor
Hi, I want to lay vinyl flooring in two downstairs rooms, one with an uneven wood floor and one a slate slab floor. It is not possible in the short term to take up the floors and relay them so I need an underlay that could absorb some on the unevenness, and stop the vinyl splitting across uneven areas. Can anyone suggest…

Fitting a hearth
We're going to fit a modern wall mounted electric fire, about 12" to 18" from the floor, this is still in the discussion stage, but I would imaging a compromise will be agreed ; ). Skirting board gap to floor.
Hi. I’m removing engineered wood flooring in the house I have just purchased. To do this I needed to remove the skirting sitting on top because I want to fit carpets. Hi All, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. As part of having a new kitchen fitted we had our existing flooring (tiles) removed and new Karndean flooring fitted by a local company. Painting Problems
Good Evening, I have a 1920’s semi, we have had issue on the landing before with Alkali when replastered but nowhere else. Last weekend I painted my soon to be born babies nursery and the chimney Brest in that room left some of those wet looking marks after painting - dry to the touch but feels cold and looks wet. Earlier…

Unvented heating and hot water c/h system has hot water tank?
My son and his family recently moved into their own home and last week the heating went off and they had to get out an engineer. They have a gas boiler and an unvented system which I thought meant that the water was heated in a heat exchanger in the boiler and was thus more or less instantaneous. (This is what we have.)…

Broken Bed - Refund Refused
Apologies if this is the wrong place! My son bought a £500 bed from Barker and Stonehouse for which he paid for delivery and for some engineers from the store to come and fit the bed. Within 5 days the bed had collapsed and when checking the legs my son noted that there were holes where screws should have been. He called…

Fridge: can I fix it or do I need a new one?
It's an LEC R5010W, 3.5 years old, fridge with freezer compartment. When I got up yesterday morning the stuff in there just wasn't cold, and when I opened the ice box there was still ice but melting. I didn't have time to deal with it so I just shut the door again and by the time I got home from work it was all totally…
