Intelligent Heating Recommendations

Hi guys.

We currently have a property with 10 rads all with TRV's and no central thermostat. Its' driven off an oil fired boiler with timer for heating and water.

I'm just after suggestions for the best way to improve our control of the temps in the house and was interested in any recommendations for intelligent control either by adding in a central thermostat or by adding WiFi enabled TRV's.

Cheers

I'm no plumber but I thought having TRVs on all radiators in the system was a no no.

A central stat will turn all the heating on and off depending on temp where the stat is. Is that what you want?
  • I assume the hot water is stored in a cylinder with backup immersion heater, so I'd leave that alone.

I'd put a Digistat +3RF into the lounge and set the TRV to max in that room; the Digistat would be firing the boiler on the programme you set to achieve the desired temp in the lounge.

For the other TRV, I've only used the basic electronic TRV heads, for example the TRV in my study only opens in the evening.

I'll second the cheap electronic TRVs - got one in the bathroom, set high in the morning when showering, getting ready etc, then cooler for the rest of the day.

Something along the lines of what I'm thinking of. Not too sure whether to go for wifi enabled or electronic programmable. Any recommendations?

Nope that's what I don't want as I want to get better control over other rooms and not be dependant upon a central control

So does it link to a central controller or is just a trv?

Just a stand-alone electronic TRV - set the time and date, set a temperature programme and then just leave it and it follows it.

It doesn't talk to the thermostat or boiler controller.

It's an older version of this, cost about £15. Amazon seem to sell the latest one for that as well, but currently out of stock.

  • So do you leave you heating on 24hr a day and let these stat control the rads.

I have the heating 'on' 24hours, but whether the boiler CH energises is down to the Digitstat tracking it's programme. I set the minimum lounge room temp at 12C from 23:00 to 06:30.

start with what Honeywell evohome system.

Then work out what you really need and see if you can achieve it cheaper.
