Wiring in plaster
I have just bought my council house, and redoing some wallpaper. On scrapping the wallpaper off, there is a channel for the wiring and its not deep enough. On scrapping the paper off, the scrapper has rubbed off the outer wire casing, and I can see a red wire. In other places I can see securing tacks. It could be lighting…

Nabru sofas
Does anyone have any recent experience of Nabru sofas? We are wanting a large corner sofa plus footstool and their prices are great, but I cannot find any recent reviews. We would get colour samples and visit the warehouse first. We did like an Ikea corner sofa but range now discontinued and it wasn’t as big as we would…

Hi All, Please could someone help..... I'm laying new carpet in a old property (1700s) and the floor boards are very uneven. The last owner put rubber underlay (5mm thick) down under the old carpet which is excellent at making floor feel even and gives the carpet support but isnt the most comfortable to walk on. As the…

Looking for stylish armchair that will convert into a temporary bed
An incident meant OH was unable to walk and climb stairs for a couple of weeks. Is there an adaptable armchair (perhaps without arms) of a reasonable height which will adapt to a temporary comfortable bed in a living room in case this happens again. Any leads to any suitable suppliers please?

Ikea washer dryer not drying
I got a Renlig washer dryer last year from Ikea and I know it has warranty and an engineer will come out if I call. I want to make sure though that I’m using it correctly first. Pressing the right buttons in the right sequence for example. I don’t always find Ikea instruction manuals very clear. For example it says to…

Online kitchen units
Sorry for another kitchen post. We need a 600mm x 600mm L shaped corner wall unit that is 900mm high. DIY kitchens do these but not in the handless style we were looking at. They do an angled corner but I'm not sure I would like the look of that. Can anyone recommend any other online companies? It looks like Units Online…

Collapsed/broken public sewer pipe
I think I have a broken/collapsed public sewer at the back of the house under the patio. This is the sewer pipe that runs from house to house in our cul de sac. I believe there is a problem because (a) paving slabs around an inspection cover have sunk and are uneven and (b) there is a rodent hole going down towards the…

ALL hot taps lukewarm since tiling job...
Hi all! Recently had some work done in the bathroom (retiled floor, new sink and toilet put in). Since then ALL the hot taps (shower, bath, bathroom sink, kitchen sink) in the house are producing water that could at best be described as warm. We have a combi boiler new in 2015 but it was fine before this so I'm assuming…

Double Glazing: Replacing the top part? What is likely cost to be professionally fit?
Hello all, I need to replace the top part of one double glazed window. The window looks something like this example: I only need to replace the top bit that opens. What would be the likely estimate and who are the best people to contact? Would like it to be done by someone who knows what they are doing as I am not sure how…

LEDs in bathroom not lasting long.
I have good quality (ie pretty costly) LEDs around the house - all GU10 ceiling spots and bought from the same company. The oldest ones, in the kitchen have been there since 2014 and have been faultless. I've had failures, after about 18 months, in a couple in the living room ones but the worst problem is with the bathroom…

Kitchen units: oven next to corner blank
Does this work and fit? A built-in oven unit butted against a half-blank corner unit: colours of the other units are arbitrary. Or would the oven door catch on the unit to its right? Do I need to find room for a small filler unit, 300mm or so, between the oven unit and the orange one? Thanks,

Efflorescence on walls
In our front room we have a problem which I (think) I have identified as efflorescence - it's a white 'fur' which wipes off easily. The walls aren't damp where it appears. The house is 1920s and stone. It's rendered and painted on the outside. The sand used for the mortar was just beach sand, so I'm assuming that's what is…

remote heating controls
We are converting some apartments on the Welsh coast for holiday rentals. I would like some sort of remote (Hive/Nest???) control for the heating so that we can control it remotely from my phone. There are two 2bed apartments with combi boilers and a 4bed with a system boiler. Any suggestions as to which will be suitable.…

New extension
I'm applying for planning permission for a permitted development ( neighbors consultation scheme as going out 4m) and submitting building regs. I am drawing the plans myself, but find drawing the roof particularly difficult. If i get the height of the eaves or the ridge slightly wrong and they need to change at the…
