2 layers of underlay?

Hi All,

Please could someone help.....

I'm laying new carpet in a old property (1700s) and the floor boards are very uneven. The last owner put rubber underlay (5mm thick) down under the old carpet which is excellent at making floor feel even and gives the carpet support but isnt the most comfortable to walk on.

As the rubber underlay is in excellent condition and seems to offer a good base to an uneven floor I didnt want to take it up.

My question is......Is it ok to put down a 2nd underlay (Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm) on top of the rubber underlay, to add to the comfort? I have to step down to my bedroom so no issues with having to cut anything off the bedroom doors but havent fitted carpets before, so wasnt sure if there was any reason why you shouldnt fit 2 underlay, under a bedroom carpet.

Thanks for any replies...

  • 16mm of underlay is far too thick. You’d never get the carpet on the grippers.

Buy some wood floor screed and level any bad hollows off
6mm ply the floor wall to wall nailed at 6" centres with 20 mm screw nails.
Then fit the carpet as normal.

I've got 5mm woodfibre underlay boards topped off with 11mm think foam. But the woodfibre boards go almost to the wall and the gripper rods are screwed down on top. Carpet grips well all round the room.

  • I assumed OP meant to add 11mm to the existing 5mm inside the existing grippers.

I used 3mm MDF in a bathroom, produced a nice flat finish.

    Hi TheCyclingProgrammer,

Yes, was thinking of laying the 11mm on top of the existing 5mm inside the existing grippers. As the 5mm rubber underlay is already down and the grippers already fitted, was hoping to save work and money by just placing another layer (11mm) of underlay on top before putting carpet down.

From the helpful comments above, it would seem this is not a good idea and I should take up the old underlay before putting down the new 11mm underlay(so I would only have one layer) Is the only issue because the existing grippers would be too low to hold carpet in place? As could get round this by securing carpet under skirting or by adding secondary grippers where needed....

    thanks again all,
