Double Glazing: Replacing the top part? What is likely cost to be professionally fit?

Hello all,

I need to replace the top part of one double glazed window.

The window looks something like this example:

I only need to replace the top bit that opens.

What would be the likely estimate and who are the best people to contact? Would like it to be done by someone who knows what they are doing as I am not sure how to or if it's easy.

I want to avoid being ripped off and don't want to be over-sold by them suggesting replacing other windows too while at it because 'it's a cheaper or a great deal'.

  • Almost impossible to just replace the top opener, if that's what you're asking, and if you could, it'd probably cost much more than replacing the whole lot.
There are so many different profiles, it would be almost impossible to match it to the existing.

What's wrong with it, why do you need to replace it?

    It doesn't close any more.

I replaced the lock before and it worked for a year but now it is not very functional.

On Wickes a similar window costs http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Upvc-A-Rated-Casement-Window-White-1190-x-1160mm-Top-Hung/p/113062

What would it cost to buy a new one, take out the old one and fit a new one?

Do Double Glazing normally do just one windows?

Are they these type of hinges?
    https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Ironmongery/d170/Window+Hardware/sd3183/PVCu+Side+Hung+Window+Hinge/p24398

If so, do they open and close easily or are they sticking?
You could try cleaning and a spray of Wd40 or oil.

Or if necessary, measure them and buy new replacement hinges.

uPVC frames are all different depending on who made them.
To fit a new frame requires accurate measurements and they need to be made-to-measure.

Best prices are from about £250 per square metre tovremove and replace whole window. That however is not for a small window or just replacing one so would guess, and it is only that, about £400.

You could do worse than get two or three local firms to give you a quote. Probably unlikely but they may be able to reuse the glass and if so and it is in good condition being the most expensive component it might save you a bit.

I would however agree with the above (societys child post) to first look at why you have a problem and trying to fix it first as that will be by far the cheapest!!

The lock mechanism inside the window is broken.

I noticed it with a torch light this morning looking in once I took out the handle.

The lock hook is not turning.

AFAIK the catches / locks can all be changed. Get in touch with one of the places online that do spares, or have a look on eBay etc. Also have a look on YouTube for how to videos for your type of window.

But, but, the glass isn't broken

Remove the mechanism and repair, or replace.
  • Hi

If the glass is broken it is very easy to replace for around £30 supply only. If the profile (The White plastic the window is actually made from) is broken it'd be near impossible to first find the profile system.. Then find a fabricator who makes windows using that system. Then hope that they still have some of the old system left. Then get them to make you just the sash in identical sizes.

If the friction hinges have gone they are about £15 per pair. If the lock mech has gone you're locking at about £25.
