I told her to tell them to go away and assumed all…

Would a GRP front door canopy be noisy?
Am looking to replace our old, rotten wood front door canopy/arch and seen a lot of GRP replica types (not the clear plastic cheap types), and some look really nice Question is would they be really noisy when it rains? Random I know, but as a child we had an old lean-to on the back of the house with plastic sheet roof and…

Paint peeling off wall
Hi all, Long time lurker but unfortunately i seem to have come across a problem that the search function cannot help me solve. The paint is peeling off a part of our kitchen wall in the same area where the garden tap is located on the outside - the pipe from the tap comes from the kitchen and through that part of the wall.…

Cellar storage conversion
Can anyone help with where to start with possibly converting my cellar into a more pleasant storage area? We live in an end terrace with a 2mx5m approx vaulted cellar with stone floor and brick walls. I won't be using it as a living space so I'm not bothered about complying with building regs. But I do want it to feel like…

Walls not strong enough to fit blinds
We having blinds fitted to most of the windows in our house at the moment. The lounge was fitted no problem, however the blinds guy hit a snag in our two smaller bedrooms. The wall above the windows wont hold the screws to fit the blinds, the wall is just not strong enough. He suggested getting a builder out to perhaps put…

Front door locks - why no dead lock?
My b-i-l recently had a new front door installed. This has a handle on both sides and has to be locked inside and out using a key ,(unlike his previous door which had a traditional latch which locks when closed and can be opened from the inside via the latch. ) I think the newer locks are called double cylinder locks? This…

Advice from carpet fitter please
Hi, We had a stair runner installed yesterday but I have issues with it. You can see some of the underlay when looking between stair spindles. It is also not very tight in places over tread. My main concern however is the first step. I can see why the fitter did it that way, because it is the natural flow of the material,…

Identify Asbestos Wallpaper?
Hello, New to the forum so please educate me if I blunder :) I am purchasing a house that has been heavily wallpapered and I plan to remove as soon as possible, DIY possibly. As the house is 1960's I'd like to know if there is any possibility of asbestos in the wallpaper removal. I understand this can't be definitively…

Anyone ever replaced the D-rings on boots?
I have a great pair of boots, but the D-rings have all sort of 'rusted' (gone white actually), broken and are dropping off. Rest of the boot is fine. I was wondering if anyone had ever replaced just the D-ring on a boot? Not the whole ring and eyelet and rivet thingy - just the D-shaped ring that goes through it. Not this…

Exposed wiring

Very high figures for wash times - new machines
I'm looking to buy a new washing machine and I've noticed that the figures quoted for wash times are very high - much higher than for my old, 13 year old Bosch. Is there a reason for this? I would have expected modern machines to be quicker, use less water and less energy but it seems not to be the case, if only in speed…

Main stop tap dripping slightly
So - over the weekend we had and solved a problem with an upstairs loo that started leaking. However during the fixing and testing we had to turn the water off (inside the house) quite a few times at the tap fitting in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. Just putting all the cleaning products away in that cupboard, and I…

Filling in the Gaps in a Windowed Door for the Bathroom
We have this sort of a door: However it's for a bathroom we'll be using mainly for guests. We'd still love natural light to go into the bathroom but don't quite know how to cover the plain squares. So this got me thinking into a mirror effect, or some frosting effect. Does anyone know of some sort of frosting that is…
