I need some advice on fitting architrave

Options
I'm going to have a go at fitting architrave so could someone give me some advice on the best way to find out what angles I need when a doorframe is not square.

How out of square is it? You would probably be better off fitting the archs square and painting the frame and arch the same colour.
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

Unless the door frame is massively out of square, you can still fit the architrave square. You just leave a bit of the frame showing and paint it all the same colour.
  • I don't know how much the frame is out of square but it's not 90 degrees so cutting a 45 degrees mitre is not going to work. So is there a easy way of finding out the angle I need before I waste to much wood.

This wouldn't work as the architrave I'm fitting is going in to the wall so I couldn't overlap them. The way they did it they still didn't have a perfect mitre and the reveal wasn't the same as the top.

Measure the angle of the frame, divide this by two. Cut each piece of wood to this angle, and if you have done it accurately, the two should match up.

Measuring the angle is the tricky part - You will need a combination square with a protractor head.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Would you have a drawing on how to do this with the combination square and a protractor.
  • Is it really that badly out of square? As others have said unless its really terrible, fixing the architrave square and painting it and the frame to match might actually help mask it a bit. Got a photo?

As a side tip, when you fit the architrave, start off by only fixing it with a few pins and only bang them in just enough to hold them in place. This will give you the chance to make any small adjustments - only drive the pins home and add additional pins once you're happy with the positioning.
  • I cannot tell how much out of square the frame is as I cannot find any of my tools just yet. If I put a 6mm pencil mark all around the frame then I cut a 45 degree mitre it matches at the top but then at the bottom of the door frame it's only showing about 3mm reveal.

That doesn't sound too bad, especially as it will be most noticeable at the bottom where you rarely look.
