Quote given and tentatively agreed - now unable to carry through?
Thanks for any help. I had a local firm out looking at my kitchen and they had given a quote for the material cost of the cabinets etc. and at that stage I had given a tentative agreement on their costings with the agreement that I would be contacted by contractors they work with for details on the costings of what they…

Solid wood or engineered wood flooring..
Really struggling to decide between the two, read so many pros and cons to both. We are using it for the whole of the downstairs apart from conservatory, so hall, lounge, dining room and kitchen. Cost of cutting a new loft hatch?
Our loft hatch is above the top step of the stairs, it is too small for a loft ladder. What would I be looking at, cost wise, to have a new hole and hatch door installed on the landing, no ladder needed. Also, who would do this? Called a ladder company, but as the house is 1930s they would not be able to do this.

insulating over boarding in loft
There is around 100mm of insulation between the joists, this has then been boarded over. At the moment we don't want to use the loft, but it seems silly taking up the boards. Would it work if another 170mm of insulation was laid on top of the boards?

Extortionate ADT alarm charge
I used to have a monitored alarm contract with ADT, but cancelled it some years ago. Recently it developed what seemed like a fault because it was beeping intermittently at all hours. So this was enough to keep everyone in the house awake so one night my wife had had enough so she rang ADT at 5.00 AM to ask them to sort it…

Boiler Quotes and understanding flow rate implications
Wow, that was a long title :) OK, so, my Worcester 28si is on the blink again, and rather than spend a couple hundred getting if fixed I thought now would be an opportune time to look at replacing it (I think it is about 16 years old). I have had a number of quotes with quite a variance in price, but first I was trying to…

Central heating problem
The radiators come on when the hot water comes on. The central heating on the timer is set to off. One plumber looked at it and said the problem was that the timer is broken, so it is coming on even when it should not. The solution is to get an electrician to change the timer/thermostat. Another one has come today to have…

Moved Home - Garage Electrics Issue

Paint stripper - turned into treacle!
I've used Screwfix Paint & Varnish remover - pretty much as directed on top of some old woodwork that I think is covered in varnish and shellac (sp?). My problem, it has pretty much turned into black treacle and sticks like fury to everything - the skirting board, scraper, scrubbing brush, my hands etc. I've tried a couple…

Unitsonline - anyone used them?
Hi all I've been looking into kitchens, and really like all the great things I'm hearing about DIY Kitchens, but a little apprehensive about making an order with them since they don't offer a design service.
