Paint stripper - turned into treacle!

I've used Screwfix Paint & Varnish remover - pretty much as directed on top of some old woodwork that I think is covered in varnish and shellac (sp?).
My problem, it has pretty much turned into black treacle and sticks like fury to everything - the skirting board, scraper, scrubbing brush, my hands etc.
I've tried a couple of things to see if it will dissolve a bit - paintbrush cleaner, Petrol (outside on the scraper) but nothing seems to unsticky it !
Has anyone got any suggestions for what to get the residue off with??
