Converting an electric garage door to manual
Hi Can anyone offer advice on converting an electric garage door to manual? The door is about 10 years old and we've found over the last 6 months the mechanism is failing. They don't make any parts to fix the current motor and It's now at the point where it takes 2 of us to open it. There's nothing wrong with the door…

Damp Bricks Outside - New Build House
Hi All I wonder whether anyone can help with some thoughts on the below pictures which show one corner of a new build house I am looking at possibly buying. The bottom 3 bricks seem to be damp next to the roof downspout which goes into the ground. It seems to spread along the bricks under the door & down the side of the…

I despair sometimes.
Just been in B&Q and Wickes, looking for a band-saw. Not only do neither store stock them, but the people on the Customer Service desk, didn't even know what a band-saw is. Having been unable to find one, I decided I'd have to go old school, and do the job with a Fret Saw. They only come with the blade fitted the wrong way…

Any luxury vinyl floor fitter recommendation around Bedfordshire?
Hi, I want to figure out the budget for getting rid of my (not-anymore) beige carpet and install some luxury vinyl instead (Polyflor). [Even though I read around that it's fairly easy to install, I'm a chicken and think that probably everything will go wrong and I don't want to risk it!] So, even though it's a long shot,…

New Ceramic Hob - Pans!
I have just had a new ceramic hob fitted. It's very posh and new (thanks landlord). I spent £150 on pans many years ago and they're still going and have done me well. However the coating on the underside is coming off in places which has left it coarse in some parts. Now, this worries me as I don't want to damage the…

Dealing with incompetent bathroom fitter
Just looking for some general advice here. We got keys to a new house around 26th August and have been doing it up, and just moved in yesterday. In advance of getting the keys we'd looked for someone to refit the two bathrooms and chose someone based on the meetings, price and some local facebook group recommendations. The…

Bathroom sink leak
The wife's noticed that there's water on the floor under the sink in the bathroom. At first we put it down to me being messy. But it persisted over the last two weeks and I've had today off so I investigated a bit further. I cleaned the area dry, stuck newspaper under the sink and then slowly ran the taps so the bowl was…

Possible to wire an LED bathroom cabinet to a shaver socket? - it has no switch!
Hi all, hope you're well :T Your thoughts on electrical question would be much appreciated! I purchased a lovely Ikea bathroom cabinet with LED lights called Storjorm and it looks great, except that it has a serious design flaw - no light switch! It's supposed to remain permanently on! I'd rather not waste electricity so…

Beko dryer , any tech's that can advise please ?
Hi , we got a beko condensing dryer about 18 mth's ago and it's been fine until the other day . It basically kept tripping the fusebox everytime the cycle started . I knew exactly what the problem was as our old hotpoint dryer used to collect water and the impeller fan would chuck it up and rot / short out the heater…

What would you do with this fireplace?
Hi all, Trying to decide what to do with our fireplace and thought I'd see what other people would do! I'd like to somehow spruce up the bricks, put nice tiles over the gross ones at the bottom and maybe slate hearth and then sort the skirting around the edge. Any ideas on whether j can improve the bricks? We're in a smoke…

Installing a stopcock
I live in (and own) a flat on the top floor of a small block of flats. The only stopcock for my flat is outside the building (and in an emergency would involve negotiating a few flights of stairs and 4 locked doors/gates/cupboards!) The pipes do divide into separate pipes for each flat at that initial entry point so I do…

Neighbour proposed extension would block Kitchen Window
Hi All, My neighbour is proposing extending his bungalow to the rear of the property. Our properties are alike and built at the same time. The two properties were staggered, I guess, so that my property would have natural light from the kitchen window, rather than looking at a wall. I was wondering whether I would have a…

Scaffolding and repointing
I'd be grateful for some advice on costs of scaffolding and repointing, I am in the process of buying a flat and it has come up as potential future works. I don't have much in the way of detailed information as I don't yet own the flat. I am trying to find out how much it might cost to repoint a 12 flat, two storey…

Painting uPVC window frames
The frau has it in her head that we need to paint the brown upvc window frames white. She hates the brown, as do I. I think the paint will look a bodge job and !!!! and we would be better saving to replace the windows fully. Anyone ever painted their upvc frames or thoughts on it?

Help with heating
We have an intermittent problem (every 2-3 days) in that once our heating has been on for about 45 mins - an hour it becomes REALLY noisy. It sounds like there is a motorbike in the house. The only cure is to either turn the heating off, or turn every radiator in the house up to full blast. We have a homecare package with…

Zanussi / Currys warranties
Just been into Currys to buy an electric oven. The Zanussi one I wanted was out of stock but while chatting to the sales assistant he told me it was covered by Zanussi's 1 year warranty which was parts only and if I wanted more I'd have to take out a Currys extended warranty. When I pointed out the Sale of goods act he…

One chilly room!
Hi, I have one room in my house that feels several degrees colder than the others. It is an upstairs bedroom that shares a wall with my neighbour, as my place is semi detached. I have insulation in the loft above, both between the rafters and back over the top perpendicular to the rafters. I also have secondary glazing in…

Kitchen end panel.
I have a high gloss kitchen with granite work tops. I have managed to damage an end panel and want to replace it. Replacing the end panel wouldn't usually be an issue but it appears to have been bonded to the granite worktop! Would anyone be able to give me some tips? Also has anyone had granite worktops repolished?
