Moving Electric and Gas Meter
Hi, I have to move electric and gas meters around 4-5 meters. My gas safe engineer recommended another engineer and he told me that he has qualifications to move. However, when I talked to National Grid, they are saying that he needs to be on Llyods Register otherwise he cannot do the job. But he is not on the Llyods…

Calling all kitchen designers!!!
A bit of advice please if I may...you don't really need to be a kitchen designer...I would welcome any opinion... How do you centre a 1.5 bowl undermount sink on a window. Is it... 1 The middle of the main bowl in the centre of the window? 2 A nominal line down the middle that includes both bowls in the centre of the…

Replacing wooden soffits etc. with PVC
I live in a 25 year old 2 storey semi detached house and it has wooden soffits and fascias. Quite a few of my neighbours have replaced their soffits and facias with PVC and I was thinking about replacing mine until I found out the cost, at least £80 a metre  Although it is a semi my roof overhangs next door so I have…

Repairing crumbling porch mouldings
We have a sandstone (I think?) porch and marble/granite pillar combo on the front of our Victorian semi. On closer inspection a lot of the intricate mouldings are crumbling away under the old paint job. Whats the best way to repair/restore this, taking into consideration some loose chunks are quire large.. Photos to follow…

The home renovation thread
I've been working on our new house at every opportunity for the past 2 weeks and feel things are progressing well. Just thought I'd share some of the work here. Now, we HAVE had to get a lot of trades in as we want to move in asap, and with a toddler and a pregnant wife there's not really a comfortable way to move into the…

Guttering pipe sizes
I need to fit a strong half round clip to a gutter, but I'm baffled about the size. The pipe it fits around seems to be around 65mm outside diameter rather than 60mm. Is guttering sized by internal diameter? I can only find clips sized at 60mm diameter in steel, would this fit? Sorry I can't post the link, but google this…

RSJ in loft causing condensation underneath
Years back we had a stack removed up to the loft and an RSJ was placed under the remaining stack in the loft. Weve noticed that when the weather gets colder we get a condensation line forming in the bedroom ceiling directly under it. Any idea in how to stop this coming through? thanks as usual

Can I save my mattress topper?
I'm having trouble with hip pain especially in bed, and for ages I've wanted a mattress topper for our king sized bed. I've just bought a microfibre one which I find comfortable although it does make the bed a bit hotter. My husband finds a bit too soft and much too hot so I've had to take it away from his side of the bed…

Old Concrete gas marker outside house
We are thinking of having a few kerbs dropped outside our house so that we can have a wider driveway. However, there is what looks like an old concrete Gas marker (about 30 cm in height) sticking up out of the pavement where we want the kerbs to be dropped. It has the letters WMG on it which I can only think is West…

Solarlux bifold doors
Just wondering whether anyone has any solarlux bifold doors who can advise what the seal should look like round the door on the outside. We had some doors fitted last week and this morning I opened them and noticed there was a lot of water in a channel in front of the door-it looks like it's missing a seal. Will be phoning…

How much will National Grid charge for a 'Live or Dead' gas test
I'm in the early stages of looking to buy a flat that has been a rental for many years. On close inspection there appears to be a gas pipe into the property. However, it is obvious it has been many years (if ever) that gas was last supplied into the flat. Having done a bit of research, it's become apparent that the supply…

Flea panic :(
I was wondering please if anyone has any advice or experience they could share regarding flea infestations? We have two cats, and have recently found out the hard way that pet-shop bought flea preventatives are not as effective as we thought they were. Two weeks ago we found a single flea on my husband's leg when we were…

Pitched roof over garage, wall plate on outer skin
I am building a mono pitched roof over garage. The garage is double skin. But the garage door/lintel is only 4 inch. If I was to rest it against this it would mean the wall plate would have to be on the outer skin. Which means the wall plate is on the outer skin(and it usually needs to be on inner. ) would this pose a…

Exterior key safes - most secure?
I'm looking at putting up a key safe outside, but they all seem to be totally insecure as far as cracking the combination goes. A quick check on YouTube shoes how easy they are to open, bit alarming to say the least! As all makes seem to use only two types of mechanisms which look the same can anyone recommend a totally…
