Can I save my mattress topper?

I'm having trouble with hip pain especially in bed, and for ages I've wanted a mattress topper for our king sized bed. I've just bought a microfibre one which I find comfortable although it does make the bed a bit hotter. My husband finds a bit too soft and much too hot so I've had to take it away from his side of the bed and it's trailing down towards the floor on my side.

The only thing I can think of is to replace it with a single topper just for my side, but it's such a waste when its practically new. Can anyone think of a solution I could try? (I can't just leave him to get used to it because if he's uncomfortable he's such a restless sleeper I get even less sleep than before.)

Pair of scissors and a needle and thread?
Or will it just fold over into two?

The couch idea is tempting! Sadly he's a much deeper sleeper than me so if anyone ends up on the couch because they can't sleep its almost always me.
The topper's too thick to double over. I guess I could attack it and try to cut it in half but I think I'd be more likely to just ruin it anyway.

Could you have half of it on your side, then the side that's dangling down tuck under your mattress? It might make your side of the bed a bit higher but it'll probably squash down after a few nights?
