Triton Shower Unit Turns Off Instead of Giving Hot Water
Hot on the heels of my other thread, I've just moved in to a new house and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I have a Triton shower that gets its hot water straight from the tank, I think. Well, it's not one of those white power showers so I assume it comes from the tank. I turn the left knob and out comes the water.…

Turning Hot Water on Turns Central Heating On?
Hi all I have a RWB9 (Siemens) control unit and set up the central heating with certain hours of operation. It asked me if I wanted to copy this to the hot water. I said yes. I left it with the Hot Water as "on" and the Central Heating as "off". So I thought this would mean it would leave the CH off and heat the tank to…

Boiler Upgrade but leaking shower box
hi there, i have recently replaced an old gravity fed boiler system with a combi boiler. After a leak on a small pipe running from my sink basin ( i think caused by the increase in pressure from new combi - it's an old property with old pipes - this was repaired by a plumber) I have now found that the shower box that is…

ventilation for new boiler
I have just had a new worcester bosch greenstar 24ri boiler fitted. I understand that this is now a sealed unit. There was a large hole to provide ventilation to the old boiler, ideally I would like to brick this up if it is not required. Can someone confirm that this is safe? Secondary question: What is the easiest way to…

Applying tiles onto either hardboard or plastered plasterboard
I'm to have new plasterboard installed in my bathroom, and then tiled. I had just assumed that the plasterboard would have to be plastered over before the tiles were applied, but I've heard that it's possible to instead apply hardboard over the plasterboard instead and then tile over this. The tiles are to run the full…

Leaking shower
Hi, I wonder if any of you could give a DIY numpty some advice? Some years ago, we had a shower fitted at the end of our bath. It was installed into a wall consisting of a wooden frame with aquapanel fitted on top, and tiles laid directly over it. Unfortunately it flexes ever so slightly, and the grout around the tiles…

Are modern boilers getting physically smaller?
My combi boiler is in the kitchen as there's no where else it can really go. However, when I do come to replace it, it would really help me if the replacement was smaller. Are the latest combi boilers smaller than they were? If not, could technology make them smaller in the coming years?

outdoors meter cupboard doors
Ok, daft question of the day from me! When I moved in, both the gas and leccy cupboard doors had broken off, they are still here, just not in place. I 'temporarily' put them back using duct tape, but really ought to get them sorted properly. but how, whose responsibility is it?

Stopping rats in an old terrace
Hey all, we bought an old terraced house last year and a few months in we heard a rat gnawing on something under the floor in the hallway. We pulled up the carpet and got a whiff of "pet shop" and could see a few droppings - great! We bought traps, pulled up a few boards and put them down and months later had only caught 1…

Icynene is dangerous unless you vacate your home for 24 hours
Icynene is a spray foam insulation that is currently being actively marketed for insulating homes as a replacement for (or supplement to) such loft insulation as fibreglass. The vendors do not seem to be aware of the fact that it can be dangerous during and immediately after installation. Your home must be vacated for 24…

Looking for something, but don't know the name
Hi All, I would like to fix something by using a tool or alike, but I have no idea about the name or where to get it. Basically we have a washing machine on a wooden floor which wobbles a lot during spinning. All usual measures (put on a robust wooden panel, anti-vibration mats) didn't work. Above the washing machine is a…

Is this smoke alarm invoice fair?
Hello, I am hoping someone may be able to tell me if an invoice I have received is fair. I had three mains linked smoke alarms in my home. One night (always a night!) they started chirping every 30 seconds so, after an awful night of beeping I called an electrician in the morning. He quoted £30 + VAT initial cost. The guys…

My Problem - Factors Neglect
Thought this would be a good place to post and get good advice. We have factors (Scotland) who we pay to organise repairs. Cut to the chase. Reported repair in May. Was told someone would to out to cover it up next morning - nothing After several workmen out to price, we received a quote, which we agreed to. Then nothing…

don't want to get them back for snags
I'm looking for some objective advice.... We had a major house extension done recently. I say recently, it began in July 2014, in the JCT contract we agreed with the builder we had an end date of mid-December 2014. The build was awful. They abandoned us half way through for a more profitable contract and just left our…
