How to open an electricity box?
Does anyone know how to open the white meter box? I just moved into an apartment and I want to take a meter reading but the key I was given broke so I bought a 4 way key but it just goes round in the hole I assume at some point it's unlocked but the Box will not open. Does anyone have any ideas or experienced this?

Dehumidifiers - dessicant or compressor?
We've had a lot of warm humid weather recently so I don't want the heat on but the humidity inside is getting too high. I've decided to buy a dehumidifer as it would also be useful in winter for drying clothes that can't go in the tumble dryer. Despite reading up about the different types and speaking to some customer…

B&Q Kitchen but IKEA internal storage?
I'm just wondering if anyone has used IKEA internal kitchen solutions in other kitchens? We really like the C&L kitchen at B&Q, but want better / cheaper storage solutions from IKEA i.e the pull out larder or carousel for a corner cabinet. There are drilled holes similar to IKEA in the C&L carcasses, but does anyone know…

Cracks in walls
I moved into my place just over a year ago. Got some painters in to psint the flat. In places they hadn't done a thorough job. Cracks weren't properly filled in, not sure if they did any sanding or if they put 2 coats of paint on. These got worse over time in bedroom and hallway, which are adjacent to bathroom. The…

Damp Patch on Chimney ~ Help Needed!
We've recently moved into a timber-framed 1853 cottage and are in the process of redecorating .... A floating damp patch on one of our chimney breasts is giving us cause for concern and we'd really like to get it sorted but are completely flummoxed by it! The patch appears not just when it has been raining a lot but also…

How much electricity is my fan/AC using?
I'm having a bit of an argument with the bill payer at the moment, as he seems to think the small tower fan I use to keep cool is gobbling up electricity, and is in fact an AC unit. The bottom of the device says the item uses 35W of electricity, which as I understand it, is pennies in the long run. However, he doesn't buy…

Under bed storage
I'm switching from a divan bed to a frame bed (mice nested in the divan long story!), and need to store duvet and suff under the bed. What's the best (mouse-proof!) container? Where best to source it? With/without wheels? As I've never stored stuff like this before, suggestions welcome.

Filling Gap in Kitchen
When we fitted our kitchen in 2014 there was a gap between the washing machine and the wall. We got a joiner to fit a board in place as photographed below - it looked better than a gap but we've just had the house rewired and are starting to finish off some loose ends - I'd like to try make this look nicer. Any thoughts…

Cavity Wall Survey - Possible Scam?
We had cavity wall insulation put in a few years back, on one of the free government subsidised schemes. It was the bonded bead type insulation, and since then we've had no problems other than a few spots of mould in poorly ventilated areas. Today, we were cold called from a company called Liberty who claimed to be part of…

Leaking toilet and out of ideas to try.
Hello, a bit long winded but I will try to keep it to the point as I would really appreciate the advice. A few months ago, we had a new toilet installed. Almost from the off, the toilet made a really quiet dripping noise and seemed to fill every so often. We adjusted the inlet valve and the dripping seemed to stop. After a…

M Stone Quartz
Has anyone had a Bushboard M Stone Quartz worktop installed in their kitchen? I am considering their product as we have a very simple installation and don't have the budget for going the templated route. Problem is that I can't find any reviews about the product - but then I can't find reviews for other specific products…

Asbestos tank
My daughter has recently purchased a house that has an Asbestos cold water storage tank in the loft in use, I have contacted a local Asbestos removal company who have provided a cost to remove this under the correct conditions. I asked if the price included an air test they said no as it is not required by HSE guidelines…

Gap Below Doors
Hello forum. I'm in the process of replacing the old (and very tatty) laminate flooring in my flat with carpets in some rooms and solid wood flooring in others. The old laminate flooring sat on top of some very thick insulation material, with a concrete subfloor below that. Now that I've got rid of the insulation material,…

Shower. Electric or Combi Boiler?
My home is being refurbed by the Council, who are installing a new bath, with a mixer tap/shower unit. If the tenant purchases it, they will install an electric shower for us. However, I've been advised that the mixer tap shower, running off the Combi Boiler, is a better option that an electric shower. Thoughts/opinions…

Wall hung toilets
We're buying a newbuild from Crest Nicholson and really liked all the specs and fittings of the house from the plan. However all the three toilets in the house are wall hung and have tanks concealed inside the walls. I know this saves space and looks much better, but not sure how practical this is when there is a repair…
