Damp Patch on Chimney ~ Help Needed!

We've recently moved into a timber-framed 1853 cottage and are in the process of redecorating .... A floating damp patch on one of our chimney breasts is giving us cause for concern and we'd really like to get it sorted but are completely flummoxed by it!

The patch appears not just when it has been raining a lot but also seemingly at random (dry) intervals. The chimney exits at the top straight into our attic (so no direct water/rain access) and both holes look clear as far as we can shine a torch down.

We definitely think it needs to be looked at but who do we call? Roofer/plasterer/chimney sweep/....

Any advice/thoughts gratefully received!!

    so the damp is on the internal wall of the chimney? Not on the side facing the outside?

    If it's damp, the water is coming from

    * the room - condensation
    * the chimney - is it ventilated?
    * above - you're sure no way rain etc can come down?
    * beneath - rising dam (unlikely)

    Process of elimination.....
  • Thank you so much! We'll start investigating the condensation route, much appreciated!
