Gap Below Doors

Hello forum.

I'm in the process of replacing the old (and very tatty) laminate flooring in my flat with carpets in some rooms and solid wood flooring in others.

The old laminate flooring sat on top of some very thick insulation material, with a concrete subfloor below that. Now that I've got rid of the insulation material, the new carpets & flooring will sit about an inch (ish) lower than the old laminate.

This gives me a problem in that there will be gaps of about an inch below all the internal doors and also a gap at the bottom of the vertical sections of architrave around the doors.

What can I do about this? Grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,
Alan.

Use a good quality thick underlay?

Add a piece if timber to the bottom of the doors, paint or stain to match,

    Replace doors.

I have put them in the order of preference (well, my preference)

Thanks. Don't think the underlay option will help because the wooden flooring in particular needs to be glued directly to the concrete subfloor. I might have to add bits of wood to the bottom of the door I suppose (ditto the architrave). Hopefully I can do a decent job & the joins won't be too noticeable... :-/

Ponder for a moment before proceeding. The Building Regulations required a 10mm minimum gap under doors for ventilation of rooms. OK you have 25mm but does this matter? To an extent it depends on what drafts you have. If your house is well sealed then there is no problem here.

I would not be bothered replacing doors for the sake of your gap. I also wonder if a simple draft brush strip would look OK here?

Thanks. No real problem with draughts or anything like that. It's just a bit unsightly, that's all. Brush strip might be ok for the doors yes. Might still need to fashion something for the gap below the architrave. Maybe a local carpenter could knock something up for me...?

Depends how particular you are and whether you will look down at that point. A piece could be Gripfilled in near enough, and the timber piece could be a feature of a square edge - it does not have to match. Years ago there were block pieces set at the base of architraves, albeit bigger than your 25mm high.

How thick is your glue down wood floor? A lot are 3/4 inch so I would have thought it thicker than the laminate.

The two are about the same thickness I think. The height difference is down to the thick Celotex insulation stuff under the old laminate flooring, which I've needed to remove.

And what is the level like if you're glueing the floor down?

Approx 2cm lower than before I would think
