Replacing all the windows in a block of flats
A bit random, but just in case anybody happens to know! In a ten-floor block, would they start at the bottom and work upwards, or start at the top and work downwards?

Sealed unit replacement FENSA
A little googling has led me to believe that if I get some cloudy sealed double glazing units replaced, this just counts as a repair and doesn't require a FENSA certificate. Is that correct?

Best way to remove paint?
Good Morning folks My garage is painted black and white, but now I want to repaint it with all white. Shall I paint a few coats of white to cover the parts where it is painted black or shall I remove the black paint first? If it is better to remove the paint, then can someone suggest the best and cheapest way to remove the…

Removing old built in wooden wardrobe
Hi all. We are moving into a property that has an old (possibly Victorian) built in wooden wardrobe. We know we will have to probably plaster behind, infill the skirting board etc..... As these would of been built round it. Is there anything else we need to be aware of? It isn't a full height wardrobe but goes about 2/3rds…

Help with Radiator Placement / Move Radiator?
I have an awkward layout in my dining area which means the only place the wooden sideboard can go is in front of the large double radiator. Until now I have lined the back of the sideboard with the foil / foam material designed to go behind radiators to reduce heat loss out of external walls. The radiator pipes go down…

Removing Lead Paint
I want to strip the paint off a few door frames - it's chipped off in places and I think a sand and repaint is going to look shoddy. Given the age of the property and the fact there is at least one layer of paint underneath the top coat, I'm concerned about the possibility of lead paint being present. Can I remove safely…

Can you use External masonry paint inside ?
My daughter phoned my today saying she had seen external masonry paint cheap at her local Aldi, £3.49 for 5 litres. She asked whether this would also do inside, on plaster I wouldn't have thought there would be any problem ... but best to ask the experts here thank you

Loft hatch
We have a loft hatch that you have to push in to the loft (it's hinged on one side). To get in means having to get ladders out each time. I'd like to be able to convert it into a dropdown hatch that has folded ladders built in. There are already floorboards there so it'd be perfect for storage. Just no idea on how to go…

Unit to go over boiler
I've recently had my boiler moved (Worcester Bosch 28i Junior) and am about to buy a new kitchen unit to fit over it. I've read the manual to ensure the space around the boiler meets the minimum requirements. There will be a door covering the entire front of the unit, but I have a choice on how far up the wall I install…

Do I really need a new door?
My back door is wooden with wired glass panels and a 3 point locking system which has failed, luckily it broke as I was opening the door or I would have never been able to open the door. The hooks top and bottom ended up partially stuck out and I had to remove the locking mechanism to get the door to shut. Something is…

Replacing an existing extension
We currently have a simple, flat roof, single storey garden room extension with patio doors. We'd like to knock this down and replace it with a more modern extension, with bi-fold doors and perhaps a wood-burning stove, maybe a gabled roof. We want it to look spectacular and be a real asset to the house. The questions are:…

Architectural designer plans - can I use them
Following on from my last post, after 19 months I'm 2 weeks away from approved to start our extension !!! Fencing rules confusion
Our front garden has a picket fence running along the side boundary with our neighbour. It stops around 4 feet from the nest door neighbours house, and there is a gap- this used to have a hedge on the neighbours side, which the ( new) neighbour removed. We want to replace the picket fence with a 6 foot fence, and continue…

How to repair an uneven cellar floor
I lifted the old lino in the cellar because I am laying new vinyl tiles. However, I discovered that the floor underneath is quite uneven in places. The concrete has dips about half an inch deep. What would be the best way to level it? I don't need it perfect, just reasonably flat so I can lay vinyl tiles on it. I've heard…

Roof tile fallen into gutter
My guttering has been leaking badly at one corner. I just had them cleaned, and the bloke said that the guttering was fine, but that one of the lowest roof tiles had slipped into the gutter and that I'd need to arrange for a roofing expert to have a look at fixing it. I know nothing about roofs and tiles, but I was…

Carpetright - carpet fitters & door trimmings
Just wondering if there's a flat charge or a per door charge? Also would you entertain their carpet fitters trimming your doors? We'll be having some 11mm underlay which i'm pretty sure will lead to the need to trim a bit off the bottom of the doors. Well, 2 doors at least. I have access to a planer but it's not the best…

Trees in neighbouring garden
No doubt has already been covered before but house 3 doors along from us, has 2 enormous tress that block the sun to all of our gardens. It is rented so tenants dont have the right to do anything, and Landlord is completely disinterested.. Anything we can do?
