How to repair an uneven cellar floor

I lifted the old lino in the cellar because I am laying new vinyl tiles. However, I discovered that the floor underneath is quite uneven in places. The concrete has dips about half an inch deep.
What would be the best way to level it? I don't need it perfect, just reasonably flat so I can lay vinyl tiles on it.
I've heard of Self-leveling compound, but not sure if that is a DIY job?

Well, we did it ourselves with a perfectly acceptable outcome and it was little more technical than sweeping the leaves out of the carport.0
