Location of fire escape window in 2-storey house?
I'm to get a fire-escape window installed in a 2-storey house. I have the option of having it installed in a bathroom, where it would be possible to walk out onto a kitchen roof to escape. However it was pointed out to me that if the kitchen was on fire then obviously this would not be possible. Is it therefore better to…

Removing trees
Hi, There is a garage next to my back garden, and it seems a tree between my garden and the garage wall is now damaging the wall. and the owner would like to remove the tree and therefore want my permission. I am happy to do so but as someone never removed a tree in the UK before, not sure if this needs some permission…

Best White Paint?
Hey all, We're in the final stages of our first property purchase - a little 2 bed maisonette in greater London. The interior is pretty nice - very few decor issues, but we've decided as we have a few days overlap with our rental flat that we are going to paint it white throughout. The colours on the walls currently are…

Hardwall, browning, bonding, sand cement or dot n dab!
Having spoken to builders & plasterers I've had a different opinion from all of them. We have a new breeze and brick extension and wondered what's best for finishing. Apparently I can dot and dab if it's just breeze block cavity wall but shouldn't if breeze and brick or brick and brick? Looks like 'float and set' is the…

Recycled or virgin uPVC for window frames
I've heard that it's better to have double glazing frames constructed from virgin uPVC rather than recycled. How would a recycled uPVC frame with a virgin uPVC outer skin compare? Is this still not as good as 'solid' virgin uPVC ? Thanks.

Damp patches appeared in rented house - move out tomorrow!!!
Hi We've been in our house for 1 year renting, and we have had no problems apart from one tiny damp patch that cam around 3 months after we moved in and told the landlord straight away. He came around the other night as we've now moved to a different house and we showed him another damp patch that has appeared, right next…

Hi all, I am not sure if this is in the correct thread - apologies if not! We have had an ongoing issue with an electrical appliance that broke down under warranty. We have had 4 repair visits and are waiting for the 5th one to be booked, and the issue is still not solved and the appliance has not been usable for weeks. I…

My house needs re-plumbing for the central heating to work correctly, I have a combi boiler only 5 years old but wanting to get the plumbing done correctly. Hole in washing machine seal again!
We have just (about 4 weeks ago) changed the seal on my washing machine only to discover this morning that a hole has developed in the same place as it did in the last one. Can anyone advise? Is this a common problem. Thank you for your help.

Need a new kitchen - questions
Really need a new kitchen. Basically the existing one needs taking back to shell and building from scratch, we're not just talking some new cabinets. Not sure how to go about it. Do you just take measurements and rock up at B&Q (or wherever), make some choices and they get on with it? Or would I need to contract out the…

Can you varnish MDF?
We've had made to measure radiator cover made from MDF. We're extremely pleased with finish, design & cost. We're keen just to coat cover with satin varnish. It's for our small study & would suit the room. Can anyone advise if MDF is suitable for varnishing? Many thanks.

jazzing up house to sell
I'm thinking about trying to sell my house this year. I'm trying to figure out a budget of what jobs to do, and what won't really add much value to the house. I know I need a new living room carpet as the one I have is from the 90's and is threadbare. I don't know if a new cheap carpet or laminate or Vinyl flooring would…

Question about roman blind rod tape
Hi all, Just wondered if anyone with sewing experience could shed some light on sewing on rod tape to a roman blind. I Can't seem to find out if it requires just one row of stitching or two. Ie: above and below the rod pocket?? Two rows of stitching doesn't seem right somehow but the man in the haberdashers said to sew…

Carpet Company Chasing Bill from 3 years ago
Advice need please. We had a HUGE extension 3 1/2 years ago and bought carpets at the end of it. The company did the whole house and are now querying if we paid for two of the rooms. I am sure we did as it would be totally out of character for us not to (easy for me to say I suppose) but in honesty if we'd thought we'd got…

Wireless doorbell problems
This is the third time I've had a replacement from the same company, but the same problem always occurs. My last unit was a home protector door chime model 61564, this is supposed to be an updated version. All work fine from any distance for a certain time, it might last hours or days before it fails. Once it fails it…
