Electrical fault - wildly different assessments from two electricians
My mum has had some lights stop working in one room in her house some time ago. Finally got around to getting an electrician in and he has told her that the whole house needs rewiring. Quoted almost five grand. Mum got a second electrician in on the same basis that the lights in one room were not working. This one has…

What to do re shoddy bathroom re-fit
Last week I had my bathroom re-fitted. A couple of months ago the builder came round and I said I wanted the outside wall taken back to the brick, insulated, plasterboard then all 4 walls skimmed over. (It's a 170 year old cottage). I then wanted a vinyl floor laying, new bath, sink and loo fitting, one wall tiled and new…

best place to purchase internal doors
Hello I would appreciate any guidance on the best place to purchase nine clear pine softwood internal doors. Homebase seems to have a good price plus an extra 20% off if you buy four or more but two of the sizes I need are out of stock. Wickes doors appear a better quality but I maybe wrong, they have the sizes in stock…

Outdoor light sensor / passers by
Hi all, Hope someone can help. One of my pet hates are outdoor sensor lights that trigger when somebody walks on the public footpath rather than when the person is on the property. Our neighbor opposite has this and it drives me nuts. While I cant do anything about the neighbors, does any one have any suggestions as to an…

cutting back neighbours hedge
A family member has recently bought a block of farm land to the rear of their home. Access is provided by the old farm track that runs between the next door neighbours house and the next house down the road, ie, if they live at 1 the track runs between 2 and 3. This is also a public footpath. The track is around 30mtr long…

Multi-fuel stove help
We've now taken our gas fire out, had the pipe capped & have a lovely open fire, for the time being. Turns out our gas engineers father installs woodburners etc. Prior to getting his dad out to survey, as we have a 16"x22" traditional fireplace, he said we could install an inset multi-fuel. We already have a clay liner on…

To bait or not to bait
I am about to leave 2 country cottages empty for 5 months. One has been empty for a month and I have baited for mice who have been and taken the bait but left no other evidence. My question is am I attracting mice by baiting as there is nothing else to attract them? Or should I bait to kill them off and stop them…

Not sure what to do about an online order?
Has anyone been having a problem with Dunlopillo orders? Back in mid-August I ordered a Dunlopillo bed for my mother online and was told that it should arrive 6 weeks time. However that was 3 weeks ago and the online retailer has been telling me that it is the manufacturer who is having problems. What should I do next?…

Boundary Law
I woke up this morning to see that my neighbour is rebuilding the garden walls, and he's noticed that the pillar that's been there since the house was built appears to be about 3" off the boundary. It's not an issue, he's happy to reconstruct on the same line, but it has just set me thinking, how does the law determine…

Screws for plug socket
I damaged my single socket in hall as had a faulty fan heater, I did notice that to remove it I had to chip plaster around it. When I replaced socket I noticed that screwing in tight as I can leaves a small gap which makes me think the excess plaster was to stop it wiggling about and to stop getting water in. Do I just…

damp proofing basement
Basement - slightly damp, but not ridiculously so. Rather than having the space tanked (which would make it smaller) I'm thinking of painting the walls with a bitumen paint and then maybe using something like masonry paint over the top. Can anyone tell me any reason why I shouldn't do this?
