damp proofing basement

Basement - slightly damp, but not ridiculously so.

Rather than having the space tanked (which would make it smaller) I'm thinking of painting the walls with a bitumen paint and then maybe using something like masonry paint over the top.

Can anyone tell me any reason why I shouldn't do this?

Well if you go to a waterproofing specialist you will get a guarantee of the work, if you don't you won't and water ingress is particularly insidious and difficult to cure .

Basements are supposed to be damp. If yku're not trying to turn it into a proper room, let it breathe.

If you are trying to turn it into a proper room, it isn't really going to work.

  • OK. Ta.

It's not really going to be a proper room - it's basically the place where we keep the wellies and feed the cat. BUT - I want it to look pleasant without breaking the bank.

DIY tanking is not hard or expensive.... But you do have to do your research. If your not calling it a bedroom then you have much more flexibility.
