damp proofing basement

Basement - slightly damp, but not ridiculously so.
Rather than having the space tanked (which would make it smaller) I'm thinking of painting the walls with a bitumen paint and then maybe using something like masonry paint over the top.
Can anyone tell me any reason why I shouldn't do this?

Well if you go to a waterproofing specialist you will get a guarantee of the work, if you don't you won't and water ingress is particularly insidious and difficult to cure .You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0 -
Basements are supposed to be damp. If yku're not trying to turn it into a proper room, let it breathe.
If you are trying to turn it into a proper room, it isn't really going to work.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

OK. Ta.
It's not really going to be a proper room - it's basically the place where we keep the wellies and feed the cat. BUT - I want it to look pleasant without breaking the bank.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
DIY tanking is not hard or expensive.... But you do have to do your research. If your not calling it a bedroom then you have much more flexibility.0
