I have had a memory foam mattress for about 6 weeks. When it was delivered we had to open out and leave it to expand for 24 hours. They said there would be a 'new' foam smell which would disappear shortly. It's still there any ideas how I can get rid of it? Mattress is lovely by the way! Thanks

Finding a good mattress at a reasonable price.
Hi all, Sorry to start yet another thread about buying mattresses but it is incredibly confusing and although reading other threads on here has been very useful (some of you are very kind and helpful), I am still at a bit of a loss. Basically, I know that I want a king size medium-firm pocket sprung mattress. I'm not sold…

Garage Door Company (NE region) .. any recommendations ?
Does anybody here have any recommendation for a good installer of garage doors, for the Newcastle upon Tyne area. I am after a 'basic' manually operated white roller shutter door. I'll get a few quotations, but rather than just phoning up 3 companies at random, far better if I can at least get a couple of good, recommended…

Washer - dryer
Now I hate the tumble dryer being on, to me it's drone, signals money being blown away. But sometimes there is no other option, with very little space and winter on it's way there are no other options. So I though maybe it's time to start saving for a new energy efficient one, or even better a washer-dryer to get the…

Filling a gap in a tiled floor?
We have a tiled bathroom floor. The tiling butts up against the skirting board. We are going to re-tile the bathroom walls, and plan to leave the floor tiles 'as is' but this throws up a problem. If we remove the skirting to wall tile down as far as the floor, there will be the width of a skirting-board size gap between…

Howdens question
Had a kitchen design done by one of their branches. In the course of conversation, we were told that branches were franchises and that we needed to get our installer to buy from that branch or the salesperson wouldn't get their commission. Now my upbringing was far from rural, but I'm getting a strong whiff of farmyard.…

Gas hob switches won't turn or ignite after cleaning
My wife was cleaning our old Ariston gas hob. She took all the knobs off and cleaned them. She says she didn't use any liquid, just a damp cloth. When she tried to ignite using the electric spark, there was a banging sound and it stopped working. The knobs had also stopped springing back up after pressing for ignition.…

Can flue be cut to flat roof level and covered over?
I have an old Godin wood burner which has a flue going through the wall into a garage and then up through the flat roof for a further 3 or 4 feet I guess. The stainless steel of it has deteriorated and you can see holes all the way through it. The burner hasn't been used for 20+ years and remains for decorative reasons. We…

Insulating plasterboard - where from?
We've just had a visit from a plasterer who said he would use 'special boards that would increase the u values of the outside walls' rather than normal plaster boards on the outside walls of our cold '30s house. He said ' they aren't expensive' 'about £6.50 each from wickes' , he would plaster 'straight onto them' after…

Bookshelves on exterior wall
We're in the process of buying a 1900's end terrace and are considering having bookshelves built along one wall of the lounge. We have lots of books! As it's a solid exterior wall would we need some sort of insulation behind the books or will they act as insulation?
