Insulating plasterboard - where from?

We've just had a visit from a plasterer who said he would use 'special boards that would increase the u values of the outside walls' rather than normal plaster boards on the outside walls of our cold '30s house. He said ' they aren't expensive' 'about £6.50 each from wickes' , he would plaster 'straight onto them' after fixing them with special plugs/ screws. This all sounded reasonable until he quoted £630 for fitting them 😄

My questions are - what is it he was going to fit? I've looked on wickes website and can't find anything that matches that description / price? All the insulating plasterboards I can see are £10-12 a board.

Also does anyone have any idea of day rates for a plasterer in South Yorkshire so I can make sure I'm not being taken advantage of?

  • Thanks for the quick reply - I saw this but this is £40 plus a sheet - he def said £6 per sheet. I guess I'll get a better quote from someone else - I didn't get a good feeling from the guy he just threw figures at us - I think he thought we had got lots of money 😄

£630 may not be too bad

You said "the outside walls of our cold '30s house"

Is this plastering multiple walls, multiple rooms?

Might be a big(gish) job - be prepared to pay....

Insulating plasterboard isn't cheap. I think Magnet Trade were selling it cheapest, of all places, when I last looked.

It's easily £25 a board for a decent thickness, I'm sure. It's good stuff though.

  • He probably means foil backed plasterboard at that price

Even foil backed is dearer than £6.50 trade

Sounds like it could have been the 1200x450 sheets of foil backed insulation board

Insulated plasterboard comes in varying thickness and various types of insulation.

  • Thanks everyone - that was helpful.

It was a quote for all external walls - although that's not as large an area as it sounds because the house as huge windows :-)

We've decided to source the materials ourselves to save on labour costs and then get a plasterer to scim the walls after.

Thanks for all your help 😄

We did the whole upstairs of our house two winters ago with this fitted to all the external walls internally, 40mm.

(not a recommendation for the above website just an indication of the product used)

For anything half decent you've got to be looking at £30+ per board and it really isn't worth doing this bit on the cheap. You might as well spend the same amount on plastering but over a good board.

Boarded over the original ceilings with 15mm (insulated above as well) and the house is now completely different to live in. Much warmer and far cheaper to heat.
