What does this wool at back of fridge do?

I am not planning on removing the wool. This is just a question about fridges.

What does the wool at the back of this fridge do?

I guess it's not called wool, what is it called?

Yep, insulation. It's usually just fibreglass, the same stuff you use in your loft. For that reason, wear gloves if you're handling it. Won't do you any serious harm, but it irritates and itches like bu&&ery !

thanks.. regarding it being insulation, is it for keeping it from getting too hot? keeping it from getting too cold? i'm curious what'd happen without it?

It keeps the cold air in and the warm air out. If you didn't have it, the fridge would essentially be a filing cabinet. The compressor would have to work like crazy to keep the temperature down and will burn itself out within a week.
